Whom Was Helen Beatrix Potter?

By: Matt Droves

Beatrix Potter whose real first name was Helen, was an English writer and illustrator who was most widely known with regard to her children's books boasting animal figures such as in the children's classic - The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Beatrix was born into a honored household where she was educated by private teachers and therefore spent her childhood years isolated from other children. She had many pets and also spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District where she developed a fondness of the landscape, plant life and animals, all of which she closely viewed and painted. Her parents discouraged her intellectual improvement as a young lady, however her analysis and watercolors of fungus led to her being widely well known within the field of mycology.

In her thirties, Beatrix Potter wrote the highly successful children's book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Close to that time she became secretly engaged to her publisher Norman Warne. This brought on a breach with her mother and father, who did not approve of Beatrix getting married to someone of lower social status. Regrettably however, Warne passed away prior to the wedding.

Ultimately Beatrix Potter began writing and also illustrating kid's publications fulltime. With all the cash from her publications, she became financially independent of her mother and father and was ultimately able to buy Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. She extended the property with additional acquisitions over time. In her 40's, Beatrix married William Heelis, a neighborhood solicitor. She ended up becoming a sheep breeder and also farmer while continuing to write as well as illustrate books for children. In whole she released twenty-three publications.

Beatrix passed away on 22nd December 1943, and left the majority of her property to the National Trust. Her publications continue to sell well across the world, in several languages. Her stories have been retold in a variety of formats including a ballet, motion pictures, along with animation.

Such is her recognition, and that of the characters from her publications, that many Beatrix Potter Figurines were created. These Beatrix Potter figurines which feature most the actual characters in her publications are getting to be incredibly collectable as well as valuable.
