The first place to look may be at the place you have your wedding. Many churches have additional rooms available for the wedding reception and using them won't necessarily add much to the cost. Some will even have kitchens for preparing the food and drinks. If you're already paying for the church, find out how much extra it would be for the reception.
Other places to check for reasonably priced space include your local community building, rec center, and even school gymnasiums. You could also consider having it in the home a close family member or friend. If the weather is nice, a local park can be a beautiful place for an elegant reception.
The next major expense for a wedding reception is usually the food. One option for saving money is to not serve a meal at the reception. Time your wedding and reception so that it won't span at meal time, and simply serve snacks, cake, and drinks.
If you aren't going to serve a meal, consider having friends help with the food rather than hiring a caterer. You can buy fresh fruit, vegetables, and fancy nut mixes from your local grocery store and have friends and family prepare them for the reception. They can be arranged on fancy platters in a beautiful way that will look perfect, and it won't cost you a ton of money.
