Video Search Engine Optimization

By: Norman Kirby

If you make a search on Google for a certain keyword or phrase, you get a results page which includes web links, photos and videos. This is part of a Google feature called 'universal search'. All types of content are now embedded in a single results page. You can of course narrow down your searches by using image search or video search alone. The point here is that if you are a webmaster who works exclusively with video content, you now have more chances of getting found by people via the search engines. Video search engine optimization is still at its early stages. There are a lot of optimization techniques you can use on text that are not applicable on videos. This is understandable because search engines cannot see nor watch videos the way they read articles or other types of textual content. Video optimizing strategies are very few but if they are diligently followed and implemented regularly, they'll help your videos have as much exposure as possible.

First, work on your video titles. The name of the video not only must contain very important keywords but it has to be interesting as well. It has to catch a reader's attention. Studies have proven time and time again that the attention span of internet users are very limited. This is due to the availability of unlimited resources and information online. This gives the users a lot of options. They can always click away if something doesn't interest them. Which is why it's very important that you work extra hard on your video titles. If you are to look at videos who go popular and viral on the internet, you can see a trend on the ways they are titled. They often have exaggerated titles like 'The Funniest Commercials Ever' or 'The Greatest Video Of All Time'. You should use this technique as well in naming your videos.

Second, pay attention to the quality of your videos. People are getting more and more tech-savvy these days. If they see a grainy or blurry video of yours, they will judge you as an amateur – someone who doesn't have an idea what he is doing. You don't want this to happen so make sure that your video is very well-polished before you broadcast it live online.

Third, make your videos straight to the point and as short as possible. Online users get bored very easily so if you can convey your idea within 5 minutes, then do a five-minute video.

Fourth, submit your videos to video-sharing sites or directories. This will maximize your videos' exposure to as many viewers as possible.

And last but not the least, have a sense of humor. Be witty. Crack jokes. Put a smile on the face of a viewer. If you are to look at all the videos that go viral online, more than half of them are funny and wacky videos. This means something – people want fun and entertainment.

Search engine optimization for videos is much harder to implement and achieve but it's all worth it once you start getting results.
