There are many types of nurses. These types can be classified on basis of their education or their duties in different departments of a hospital. There are three paths to be a nurse. You can get a diploma from a nursing school or college. You may get an associated degree in nursing or a bachelor’s degree. Then there are two types of nurses. First are registered nurses and the second are practical nurses. Advanced practice registered nurses are another type of nurses.
You can also define types of nurses on the basis of their jobs in hospitals. Like hem dialysis Nurse is appointed in a hem dialysis room to take care of patients while their dialysis process. Then there are nurses who look after people who are going through a surgery. Orthopedic nurses look after patients having fractured bones. Oncology nurses deal with patients having cancer. There are many more kinds depending upon their job titles.
Mostly nurses are not categorized by their job description rather they are classified on basis of their education level. This education level is actually the measure of the latest degree obtained by that person. Licensed practical nurses or licensed vocational nurses have lowest rank in this classification. Their practice scope is limited. They don’t have enough education. They have education of nursing for a year or so. Their task is not very complex. They are basically helpers of high level nurses and doctors.
Registered nurses have industry standard qualifications. These nurses are given preference by many hospitals. They can also have specialized education in different fields. They have more general education so they can adopt almost any environment. They deal with much more complex cases than LPN’s. They are helpful in critical care, oncology, pulmonary care and many other diseases.
Then there are registered nurses who have more qualification than normal registered nurses. These nurses go for more a more specialization education. Those nurses who get masters degree in nursing are sometimes known as advanced practice nurses. These include, Nurse Midwives, Clinical Nurse specialists and many more. These nurses have to get much more knowledge than the normal registered nurses.
Certified Nurse Assistant is another kind. They actually provide assistance to other nurses. Critical care nurses help seriously injured people. They treat their wounds and look after them. They are normally appointed in Intensive Care Unit or Critical Care Unit. Travel Nurses travel to different locations and provide their services on short term basis.
Public Health Nurses provide their services in schools, community centers and homes. They work for general help of the people. In this article, we may not confine to kinds of nurses because they are many in number. These kinds are mainly dependent on their job placements. If we classify them in terms of qualification then there are three kinds of nurses. These are LPNs, RNs and APNs. Besides these three basic types, other types are defined on the basis of their specialization in different areas of nursing Like , Advanced practice nurses, Certified nurse midwife, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist etc.
