Three key considerations before you build your garden shed.

By: Jessie Stone

Before you being to build a garden shed, ensure you consider the following three key factors. A little preparation work can save you a lot of time, effort and trouble.

1: How much time, money and energy do you have for your garden shed project?

When do you need your garden shed to be up? Do you need it in a few weeks or a few months? How much time can you spare to build the shed? What is your skill level? How much money do you have to put into this project?

By answering these questions, you will be able to work out what type of garden shed you are able to build. For example, if you don't have a lot of time or skill, a pre-fabricated garden shed may be the correct option for you.

2: What is the purpose for your shed?

There are many designs and sizes for a garden shed. Knowing the function of the shed will make it a lot easier to establish the shape and size of the shed.

Is it just to store pesticides, chemicals, and fertilizers? Would you prefer to work in the shed? Do you want a high ceiling so that you can add storage shelves and still work in it? Do you want to store long or wide items such as a kayak or a small boat?

Planning ahead for any special size requirements will ensure that the space functions to its best potential.

It is a lot easier to decide on the size and shape of the garden shed if you know what function it is going to serve.

3: Where is the intended location of the garden shed?

After deciding on what you want to use the shed for, you need to establish where do you plan to build it?

This is critical as the location have an impact on the function. If you need to store large items like a kayak, do you have enough space to move it in and out of the shed? Would you need to carry the things stored there a long way? Is there a nearby tree that may disturb the foundation? Is there any power lines nearby that could make it unsafe? Is the land level or can be made level? Do you want the shed to fit in with the style of the garden? Would the shed take up too much space from the garden?

These three considerations assess the general shed building considerations. After you have work out these factors, then you can decide on a garden shed design that fits your needs.
