They Don't Just Care About Earning Money

Jobs in medicine have long been desired by youthful people who want to make a difference. That's never been more true than now, when the country is seeing a new breed of doctor emerging from medical schools more interested in doing public service than making huge salaries in private practice.

Medical schools, pharmaceutical companies and medical insurance companies still offer large salaries to qualified individuals but many of today's graduates will turn down these jobs for lower paying positions. He, instead, decided to continue working for an organization that he established while in medical school, and earns a salary of $12,000 annually. This is just one example of the new breed of doctors who commit themselves to the improvement of the quality and delivery of medical care in America.

He states that he has no intention of practicing in the customary manners of medicine. His 4-year-old government funded organization was formed for the study of legal, dental, medicinal and educational needs for the communities of America. His ideas stem from the concept that you can't just look at an individual's health care problems without looking at the needs of their whole community. The difficulty is that there are too few available opportunities for current students who want to make changes within the system.

The condition of health care in this nation is in dire straits. The response of medical schools is coming, but it has been slow. Modern medical students have turned the tables on their institutions of higher learning by dictating to them the kinds of classes and programs they want to see in order to meet these needs and the schools seem to be listening. This has raised awareness to these issues, and most medical students wish to be part of the solution.

One of our best medical school's deans has stated that, currently, students possess a stronger sense of social consciousness, a genuine sympathy for our world, a true interest in injustices against humanity and a strong sense of belonging and purpose. The previous generation have been somewhat sedate regarding this sense of moral responsibility that the young people coming up through the system now exhibit. Medical students desiring to implement real change will also work harder to realize their goals and see real change. Changing values, higher goals and a type of life that clearly will be unusual may be sought by these young physicians. They do not want to do what's always been done just because society thinks they have to.

Prior generations of physicians held social status high on their list of goals. Success, comfort, and security in their lifestyle is what their elders sought, interested in material pursuits of a care free and luxurious way of life. If you think like the former generation of doctor, you may have difficulty understanding the perspective of modern medical students.

Students today are a part of an emerging age of community medicine where the focus is on providing quality medical care for the entire population of the community, meeting individual's health needs regardless of the financial compensation. One associate professor who supports and helps lead these reform efforts points out that while billions of dollars are spent on medical care, people are actually not any happier now than they have ever been. He also claims that without change, this trend will continue. He even believes that the overall condition of health care can become worse if changes do not occur quickly.

A certain association has been established mainly for the goal of steering med students to go into medical fields that target public health, environmental health, and preventive medicine. This association is responsible for public health projects all over the nation. It is occupied full time with achieving the integration of community health projects into the curricula of the medical schools.

Of the students who have participated in a number of these community medical projects, many have said that they wish to continue to serve the people of these areas when they begin their careers as physicians, according to a student who has spent time as the organization's program coordinator. Projects include creating clinics in deprived areas. There are also many hospitals and medicals schools that are looking into increasing the numbers of minority doctors being trained.
