By: Norman Kirby

Yehudi Menuhin and family moved to the luxury of Gstaad in 1957, in Gstaad he identified his motivation among just about the most delightful of environments having a commanding view of the mountain range, where he'd take walks with his small children. This is how there would eventually be a yearly tribute for the superb Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

The roots of the Menuhin Festival Gstaad go as far back to 1956 when the director of tourism in Gstaad asked Menuhin if he'd grace admirers having a season of concerts in the summertime, which he accepted. From this moment on, deluxe summer concerts were located in Saaneland and were referred to as "Yehudi-Menuhin-Musiksommer". The amazing events grew from 2 events to nine and in 1958; the "Zurich Chamber Orchestra" took part.
The luxurious Festival slowly and gradually became more advanced and in 1976, a committee became set up to deal with the administrative tasks. In 1989, acquisition of the Alpengala AG happened, which made it easy for substantial symphony orchestras to be brought to Saanenland. This saw the festival modified from a celebration of chamber music to at least one of Switzerland's very best and biggest luxury music festivals.

The Menuhin Festival Gstaad was established by Christopher Muller being a homage to Lord Menuhin in 2002; he effectively publicized the excellent festival having a creative philosophy program that was to set the popularity for projects and rise in the future for particular artistic spheres. The " Gstaad Chamber Music Festival" features a few of the very best artists such as Joshua Bell, Afred Brendel and Helene Grimaud, who all make music in a very relaxed atmosphere. The Festival Tent holds "Symphony Orchestra Concerts", which bring symphonic brilliance to Gstaad plus a close partnership with the London Symphony Orchestra. The children of Saanenland play in the "Musical Project for Children" presenting 30 to 50 children from the region. Many legendary works for example "Pollicino" from Hans-Werner Henze and "Carnival of Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens have performed.

In 2008, the "Orchestra Week for Amateur Musicians" was set up offering new comers the chance to perform alongside leading performers from recognized orchestras. It was supplemented with the "Youth Orchestra Week" last year permitting over 130 enthusiasts the chance to participate in the Menuhin Festival Gstaad.
