Tanzania Kilimanjaro – What are the routes to climb Mount Kilimanjaro?

By: Jason Steller

There are there different routes available for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. They are the Marangu, Machame, and Umbwe. The most popular of the three is the Marangu route. The Machame is another popular route to use. The most difficult route that requires you to be quite experienced and in good health and stamina is the Umbwe route, although it is the shortest.

The Marangu route up Mount Kilimanjaro is the easiest, as the route goes up and down Kilimanjaro at a moderate slope. It is also probably the safest because even if there is trouble, it is the only route that emergency evacuation service is readily available. The route also has the benefit of huts available for sleeping as well as dining huts.

Typically the Marangu route is completed in five days of hiking. For the best chance of reaching the summit it is recommended you take a day to rest at Horombo Hut for altitude acclimation. This is the best choice for those with little mountain climbing experience, as the route is the least challenging of the three and most comfortable with the huts as opposed to the tents the other routes have as accommodations.

The second most popular route to take up Tanzania’s Mount Kilimanjaro is the Machame. This route is typically done in 6 to 8 days. The variation is based on the time taken to adjust to the altitude. Note that some tour operators do not offer the extra day of acclimation at the Karranga Valley, so choose wisely based on your physical limitations and how important it is to you to try and successfully summit Kilimanjaro. The Machame route can be quite physically challenging, especially since the last two days are usually the summit and back down to Park Gate. Along this route trekkers stay in mountain tents.

The least popular route up Mount Kilimanjaro is the Umbwe. This is because it is the hardest and still a rather off the beaten path route. This route is usually done in about 7 days. Distance wise this is the shortest route to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, in order to take this most direct route trekkers face a very tough route. Thus less distance does not actually mean easier or less exhausting route in the case of mountain climbing. This route is only recommended for those with mountain climbing and hiking experience. Trekkers stay in tents on this route.
