Save Money On Dental Care with Discount Dental Plans

By: Jeffery Holter

For many people, few things seem less exciting than going to the dentist -- unless it's paying for dental insurance. Rising insurance premiums and high deductibles make dental care costly. But an increasingly popular way to pay for health care - discount dental plans -- is changing that.
Discount dental plans provide affordable dental care. They aren't insurance but are discounted fees-for-service plans. The thousands of dentists who participate in the plan accept the discounted rate as their full payment. Discount dental plans work in conjunction with most dental insurance plans, serving as a backup for services not adequately covered by insurance.
For consumers, the dental benefits are significant. They save money at the front end because the discount plan costs much less than insurance premiums, and because there are no deductibles to meet. They save money at the back end because the participating dentist accepts their discount plan as payment in full, with no uncovered costs for the consumer to pick up.
How much difference does that make? For customers of Dental Call, a pioneer in providing affordable dental care, the savings can be up to 60 percent. A few examples dramatically demonstrate that point. A comprehensive oral exam costs $20 with Dental Call and $50 without it. A tooth cleaning for an adult is $50 with the discounted dental plan and double that amount without it. Two years of comprehensive orthodontia for adolescents is $3,250 under the plan and $5,400 without it. (Cost examples are based on the New Jersey fee schedule.)
With that level of savings, the cost of the discount dental plan could easily be made up within the first few dental visits.
Pre-existing conditions pose a major hurdle when buying dental insurance but not with discount dental plans, which have no limitations for conditions that pre-exist. Unlike dental insurance, discount dental plans have virtually no restrictions on use. There are no annual limits on coverage, so patients can use the card as often as needed or desired. Enrollment is immediate, with no waiting periods before coverage goes into effect when signing up by phone or online, depending on the discount dental plan provider.
Enrollment allows the consumer to choose from a network of participating dentists and to gain freedom from filing insurance claims. Coverage plans are available to individuals, couples, families, groups, businesses and organizations. Dental Call covers couples even if they are not married, and its family plan covers college-age children away at school and elderly parents living at the home of the dental plan member.

While many businesses provide health insurance to their employees, this often means medical coverage but not dental benefits. In some cases, group health insurance is available to workers only if they pay at least part of the premiums. Part-time or contract workers often receive no health insurance benefits. Discount dental plans allow individual workers - or their employers -- to buy health plans at a group rate. The rate is often much lower than other dental plans.
Prudent shoppers never pay full retail when buying goods. Providers of discount dental plans want that rule to apply to health care consumers as well.
