When devices are used, there are precautionary measures that are usually indicated by the manufacturer. Many times we overlook these measures much to our own detriment. You can not but marvel at an air hoist when you see the weight of the huge load that this small but powerful machine is capable of lifting. The fact that people soon get use to the machine's performance day after day, they begin to take for granted the work and the harm this machine may cause. It is always required that a trained hand uses the machine. Where there are many operators, the most senior operator is expected to see to the use of the tool. Whoever it is that has been appointed to operate the machine must bear in mind to operate a lay-down-line or what is known as hoisting personnel. The operator must stay in eye contact with person being lifted or if it is an object that is being lifted, the operator must make sure that he gives it a rapt attention and must not be distracted by other people or anything.
There is no way you would think about the loads that are lifted overhead by an air hoist that you would not sober up to the reality of the serious health and safety hazards that involved in the business. When an air hoist operator finds it difficult to maintain a constant eye contact with person lifted or the heavy object that is being lifted, it is advisable to delegate the duty of signaling to someone. An experienced observer should be on hand to give signals to him so as to direct him as to where to move to avoid damage to the object being lifted or injury to the person being lifted. The air hoist operator as well as the person being lifted must be free from all obstructions. The same goes for an object that is being lifted. This is important because where there is an obstruction to a limb or part of the person or object being lifted, the air hoist operator may not be aware of this and there could be injuries or damage sustained on such parts.
Another safety precaution usually prescribed for air hoisting especially at oil rigs is that there should be a provision for a tag-line that would be attached to the harness of the person that is being lifted which would then be guided by the people below. It is also necessary for all necessary tools to be tethered to the person that is being lifted. You must take note that all operations performed using an air hoist have varying degrees of difficulty. It is therefore safer if the most difficult tasks are performed by the most experienced operator.
