SEO Practices For Your Online Writing

Search engines like Yahoo, Google, Bing and others continually crawl the web looking for relevant content that answers the needs of its users. It indexes or stores links to its findings in an enormous database. SEO, or search engine optimization involves writing copy that is optimized to improve the ability of search engines to index and rank a site, thus bringing it more organic traffic through natural searches. By choosing terms that are frequently searched for and wrapping them in relevant content, you attract targeted traffic, whether it be a website or blog, an article or other type of copy.

Optimizing your content involves choosing and using methods to make your copy relevant to a particular search term or user query. The first step in optimizing copy is to choose a single keyword or keyword phrase that will be the theme for your copy. Use a keyword tool that will reveal the exact words or phrases people use in searching a topic. Your entire page should be written around this one keyword or phrase.

Once you have chosen your keyword, you want to ensure it it visible to the search engines. Use it in the title, preferably near the beginning, and make sure your title flows well. It is what will appear first of all on search engine results pages. Keep your title to a maximum of around 70 characters, since most search engines only show that many characters.

Pages also need more information available for SEO, and providing a page description of your page, whether it be a meta description that only the web crawlers see or short copy that summarizes your page. For example, Word-press makes it easy by providing a section where you can add a description. This could also be the first paragraph of an article or a sub-heading. What is important is to include the keyword phrase in a relevant and natural way.

Your actual article or page can be further optimized for search engines in a variety of ways. Use heading tags, H1 or H2 for your heading so the engines can locate them easily. Bold your first use of your keyword in the first paragraph. Include text that used bullet points, since both search engines and readers like them.

Include a couple of related keywords or phrases that you found in your original keyword research within your article or post. Since the web crawlers look at not just keywords but also content, including some other commonly searched for words or phrases will make your writing appear more relevant. All keywords should be used so that the reader finds the writing flows naturally, and should never seem to be over-used.

Search engines love to see both images and videos, and will more highly rank pages that include them. With all images, use an Alt tag and a title tag. These tags must include your keyword to be most effective. Alt tags give search spiders information about the image, and will also show up for a reader if images are prevented from appearing.

Hyperlinks on pages also contribute to SEO. Hyperlinks are text, usually including the keyword, that is linked to and leads to another page on the same site. That page must contain content that relates well to the keyword and the originating page. Pages on a site should both contain hyperlinks and also be the destination for hyperlinks. This internal connection of pages will make search engines rank your site much higher. Other links to include on your site are outgoing ones to authority sites that have high search engine ranking.

By writing informative and authoritative copy in an easy-to-read manner, including key words and phrases naturally, you will be found and ranked by more highly. Use these techniques for on page SEO, and increase your credibility with both the search engines and organic searchers and attract more traffic.
