Robotics: Enhancing the human way of life

By: Mark Rey

Robotics technology is growing at a rapid pace, opening up new potential for automating tasks and enriching the lives of humans. From the automobile assembly line to automatic home vacuum cleaners, Robotics has become a part and parcel of the human world. Here are a few examples of robots and robotics providing a useful helping hand to humanity.
NASA and General Motors are working together to develop the next generation dexterous humanoid robot, that will be capable of using their hands to do intricate tasks. They are also working on other projects related to robotics technology for the automotive and aerospace industries. Russian scientists are working on the mission of the unmanned Lander for a 2011 mission to Phobos, one of the moons of Mars. This mission is expected to begin in November 2011 and last for 330 days and will most probably be a display of the robotics prowess of the Russian scientists in the field of robotics.
As a part of the efforts to develop futuristic machines capable of assisting humans, Toyota Motor has come up with two robots. One can play the violin and other is a two-wheeled single-seat "mobility robot" that could be used to transport an elderly or disabled person over uneven ground and around obstacles. "We began to use industrial robots in our factories in the 1980s that have been perfected over time to be capable of working on several car models or carrying out different tasks," said Toyota Motor Corp. chief executive Katsuaki Watanabe. "Now we want to accelerate the development of robots that make a contribution to society, drawing on our knowledge and innovation in the field of automobiles"
A French company known as Robosoft has developed Kompai, a robot that is specifically designed to help the elderly and disabled people. It can navigate autonomously, talk and understand human speech. All these activities are done with the help of Artificial Intelligence. Artificial Intelligence is playing a major role in robotics technology. It is being used in a wide range of fields including medical diagnosis, stock trading, robot control, law, scientific discovery, game playing, speech recognition, computer vision and understanding natural language. Scientists say that artificial intelligence will help the people to expand their physical and mental horizons, which will enable them to come up with Nanobots, which would mean, the robot that could be embedded in human being's brain that could enhance human intelligence.
Another great invention in the world of robotics technology is Bionics. Bionics has given the solution to a lot of human problems as well as served as a means of entertainment. In Japan, Bionic knees have been invented that promise to make running easier by decreasing the amount of muscle power. The scientists in New Zealand are working on Bionic legs that may potentially replace wheelchairs in the future and enable handicapped people to work normally.
An amount of $50 million is spent on a project of an Australian bionic eye which will be completed by 2011. Apart from these inventions, a thought-controlled mechanical arm, an artificially intelligent knee, and a hand with articulated fingers that can pinch and grasp objects have also been invented.
In the ever-evolving battle against cancer, the surgical robot is also gaining ground. For surgeons, robotics technology can offer enhanced precision, dexterity, range of motion and imaging during operations. Whereas for patients, robotics technology can mean less injury to nearby healthy tissue, smaller scars, reduced pain, decreased need for medication and faster recovery.
Robotics technology has stretched out itself in the gaming industry also. The gaming industry is on a boom and is coming up with new inventions which have changed the way of playing games. Nintendo Entertainment System has come up with games which have bionically-enhanced characters. Due to this technology, Nintendo has become very popular among the gamers and is dominating the $20 billion gaming industry in the United States.
Robotics technology is advancing at a great pace and the growth potential is virtually unlimited. In daily life, robotics technology has engendered an arsenal of labels. It has become the weapon with which disease will be vanquished, disabled have become able, gaming has become more entertaining and has also taken humans to the stars. With every new invention, robotics technology has proved itself to be a blessing and a helping hand to humanity.
