President Obama’s Primary Concern Not International Relations

By: Aubrey Moulton

Some feel that issues at home have kept President Obama from implementing campaign promises. Rather than honing in on international relations and improving the way many countries see the U.S., he has chosen to concentrate on the Afghanistan and Iraq war. He and many other politicians have also dealt with a sagging economy and have been active in campaigning for health care reform.
Because of these challenges the president has spent his efforts focusing on domestic regulations and let international strategy take a back seat. When he has met with foreign dignitaries and left to visit other countries he has chiefly fixed on augmenting relations with China. There are those who believe he has not the attention to Europe as he should. This has disturbed some political leaders because they eagerly looked forward to his time in office. They were anticipating the things that would improve and the rapport that they would have with President Obama and that has not occurred.
Instead of them feeling like close allies they sense that they have been overlooked. Such inattention has not been well received, particularly among America's European allies who have propped up the country for so long. Some feel that now they are being forgotten because of the new powerhouse China.
Yet another difficulty the president is confronting at home is that he is having difficulty getting his policies passed within the United States. This maims his international applomb. Doug Paal from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace stated that "When American presidents are feeble at home, it really does affect their ability to act abroad."
In 2009, Obama visited twenty one countries many of which were countries the U.S. has tense relationships with. While some relationships have healed, some have stayed the same and others have worsened, but troubles are abundant especially with Iran and North Korea. So it's hard to know how the world really feels and if that has improved at all. Iran keeps to itself and is building its nuclear program despite opponents all over the world. And North Korea isn't any better. They won't even go back to the table to discuss their nuclear program.
The struggle in the Middle East is another priority that has seen little attention. Before Obama was sworn into office everyone hoped that a way could be found to limit the bad feeling between the U.S., Israel, and the remainder of the Middle East. America's trustworthiness is being confronted and this has not been addressed anywhere. The U.S. has so many domestic issues that the President hasn't been able to focus on worldwide complications and that has also affected the image many believed Obama was going for.
But as global issues keep mushrooming and the U.S. and other countries remain on their own journeys, the relationships are becoming complicated. The U.S. has enhanced relations with Russia and they are working together to pressure Iran. However, because of cyber attacks from China against the U.S. and the fact that the U.S. is sending arms to Taiwan along with other issues the relationship is getting rockier.
While situations are still bad, particularly concerning Iran and North Korea the world has stepped up to the plate and they do realize that the U.S. can't handle absolutely everything. Everyone is trying to join to bind together our global community.
