Odorous Black House Ants -Recognizing Them and Eliminating Them

By: Dovid Davis

Boruch Fishman: Hi, and welcome to another episode of "Day in the Life of Dovid Davis Pest Specialist." I have great news folks; we finally were able to work out the difficulties in interviewing Dovid over the telephone, and now we're going to hear live from Dovid, and he's going to talk to us about black odorous house ants. So prepare to hear the wisdom of Dovid Davis (applause)

Dovid: Black odorous house ants. Black odorous house ants are one of the most common species of ant, household ant, found on the east coast of America. Their tiny ants, but they breed rapidly Where do they like to populate.
Black odorous house ants very commonly populate around moist damp areas with close proximity to their moisture and their food based sweets. I'll give you an example. If you have gutters that are full of leaves. If you have leaves on the ground that you haven't swept up, you will find that when you move the leaves, the space will be full of ants. These ants that are commonly infiltrated into these areas are black odorous house ants. They're called odorous because when you attempt to crush them, or if you try to kill them by crushing them, they admit a small sweet tangy type of an odor that's very noticeable.
They eat any organic matter. They will eat any food in their vacinity. They tend to like it to be on the sweet side when they are foraging. But then when they are in the reproductive mode, they will actually switch to a protein based food because they will have babies they will have to support.
In the hot and humid days of summer, which are approaching, you'll most likely find after a rainstorm or a morning dew, that they will swarm into a flying swarm into a flying cask and you will actually see them swarming in the air.
In order to eliminate black odorous house ants you cannot use an over the counter product such as Raid. These are typically known as repellants meaning there is an odor associated with them and the odor repels them. What the odor will do to the black odorous house ants, it will kill the initial ants that are exposed, but it sends a warning to the rest of the colony to avoid a certain area. So in actuality, what the Raid will do is kill some, but translocate the rest of the colony some place else. Therefore preventing the chemical itself to eliminate the colony.
To eliminate the colony, you must use a non-odorous non-repellant insecticide, therefore allowing them to move into an area without detecting the poison, and it will kill the colony.

Boruch: Let me ask you a question Dovid. There is an ant called the Citronella ant that gives off a Citronella smell when crushed. Is that what we are talking about, or is that a different ant.

Dovid: No. While both ants emit an odor, the citronella ant is twice the size of the black odorous house ant. . It is reddish brown in color. And they also swarm out of the ground and you will see them swarming out of the grounds in the hundreds.

Boruch: You talked about odorless sprays, what about poisonous ant stations.

Dovid: The ant feeding gel traps contain sugar, which attracts the ants along with boric acid, which is a slow working natural pesticide. The ants ingest the poison and carry it back to the colony, where they regurgitate it to feed the queen and the works. Eventually everyone in the colony will ingest the poison and die. These traps work well as a secondary treatment. Primary to any insect control , however, you want to do an external inspection to try and locate the primary colony, so you can lay down a barrier and prevent the colony from supporting its satellites on the inside. So you want to start on the outside first and that's going to eliminate any outside reinforcements. And it might even eliminate the colony and then you want to start on the ants on the inside. The colonies may be anywhere from 20-30 feet from the house they are infesting.

Boruch: Well this is very interesting. We'll folks we've come to the end of another episode of "Day in the Life of Dovid Davis Pest Specialist," and I want to wish everyone a pest free day.
