No More Tragedies - Family's Essential Guide to Gun Safety

By: Christoper Robertson

The right to bear arms is a fundamental, and perhaps the most often-quoted, part of the American Constitution. While guns have enormous protective power, it follow that they also have enormous destructive power. And as the old man in the Gremlins movie would say, 'With guns come great responsibility'! Today we look at how you can keep your own little gremlins (children) safe around guns, with tips covering everything from the attitude to use around firearms to material tools like proper gun safes, floor safes or wall safes for storage.

Keep Your Firearms in a Gun Safe!

This is the number one way to ensure that guns never cause a tragedy in your home. The safe you choose can either be designed as a gun safe or as an ordinary security safe, depository safe, floor safe or wall safe... but it needs to be lockable and only able to be opened with a combination (which you do not record or allow the children to see you inputting), or a key which is kept extremely well hidden.

Don't Keep Guns in General a Mystery

Guns in general fascinate all young boys... it's genetic! Keeping them mysterious and forbidden will only increase the likelihood that they'll try to find ways to access your gun (perhaps getting it out of its case when you're on your way to a hunting trip and it's in the car, etc), and then more likely to have an accident with it, because they don't know how to use them. Take your kids to shooting ranges, let them come hunting with you when appropriate, etc.

Teach Your Kids That...
- The only time you should touch the trigger of a gun is when you want it to go off
- You should always assume that a gun is loaded
- You should never point a gun at a person, either carelessly or on purpose
- You must also look beyond your target when shooting
- You must be sure the gun is safe to operate
- You must only use the correct ammunition for your gun

Make Sure Your Kids Know That Your Gun is for Grown-Ups

Kids are actually used to what seems like a double standard to some adults. Children understand that they can have drinks, but not alcoholic drinks. They understand that they can watch TV, but not all TV shows. They will also understand that some guns belong to you, and some guns are only for grown-ups.

Get Your Kids a BB Gun

And make sure that even if you have daughters, they are also allowed to use it! Kids will start to understand the real power of a real gun with these kid-sized toys. When your kids are finished using their BB Gun, have them put it with yours in the gun safe, floor safe, wall safe or security safe.
