Men's TOMS and Women's TOMS were the gift of 2009.

By: Jeffery Holter

We might be at the start of a new year, but it's exciting to TOMS Shoes in a bigger way. No, not in terms of New Year's Eve parties, but the company just had an incredible year, and 2010 will hopefully prove to be no different.

Blake Mycoskie has enjoyed a greatly successful year: an exclusive shoe collection from TOMS is now sold at Neiman Marcus and Bergdorf Goodman, available from $78 to $125, from canvas designed shoes to metallic linen and silk shoes; TOMS participated in the second annual Go Go Gala, where Mycoskie was the guest of honor; the company collaborated with Kevin Rose, the founder of Digg.com on a limited edition TOMs shoe; creating other limited collections including TOMS Botas, which flew off the shelves and sold out quicker than anyone imagined, and partnering with Charlize Theron on an Africa Outreach collection; and loads of celebrities are wearing his shoes, from Keira Knightley to Brad Pitt to Kristin Stewart to Tobey Maguire to Scarlett Johansson. He's even been to the White House to collaborate with the President! Yes, President Barack Obama invited several young CEOs, including Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh, Twitter CEO and cofounder Evan Williams and Mycoskie, to participate in The Summit Series. All the CEOs invited were under the age of 40, and were called to the White House to discuss the economy with Obama administration officials.
And just before the end of the year, Mycoskie was invited back to the White House, this time to accept the Ace Award from Secretary Hillary Clinton.

"When I was told that we were nominated for this award, I was filled with one emotion and that was humility," Mycoskie wrote on his blog December 10. "As I looked over the list of past winners, all companies that we all know and respect, I could not believe that I would be going to Washington and possibly (winning this award)."

It seems that Mycoskie could barely believe that TOMS had come this far himself. "We started in my apartment with three interns, one who runs much of the operations today, and our efforts were not fueled with investment capital but a deep passion to help those original kids, and I have found in the last three years that passion and compassion can build a business."

With all that Mycoskie and the company have accomplished thus far, it's safe to say that just about anything can happen in 2010.
