Matching Shirts with Ties with Cufflinks

By: miketocson

White, blue and grey shirts are staple business shirts, which can easily be matched to most shirt ties and cufflinks. But many men and women don’t want to stay in the comfort zone of dull, predictable shirt tie combinations that make them fade into the background.
Patterned, stripped and chequered shirts have been embraced by both casual shirt and business shirt wearers over the past few years. Not only are they more fun to wear, but they can really make a person stand out from the crowd. Combined with the wrong tie, however, they can make you stand out the wrong way. A check shirt and a striped tie, or a striped shirt and polka dot tie can be dizzying at a business meeting and very off-putting at a presentation!
For a winning combination, try to:
• avoid more than one pattern – but if you must, go for one very small pattern and one big one: for instance, a wide striped shirt, a very fine pin-dot tie could work well.
• You can repeat the same pattern twice – a striped shirt and stripped tie – as long as the stripes are different sizes.
• Also, make sure that at least one colour in your tie matches your shirt, if not your suit, belt or shoes.
In New Zealand, Nicholas Jermyn Shirtmakers are the only shirt designers who match shirts to ties, and take the stress out of shirt buying for you. If you purchase a shirt online, you’ll be recommended which ties have been specifically designed to go with it. Easy.
When it comes to womens shirts, ties aren’t an issue, but cufflinks can also be a catastrophe zone. The most common cufflink colours are silver and gold. So the most basic rule of thumb is to match that to your jewellery. If there’s a stone in the cufflinks, it’s ideal to match that to the accent colour of your shirt, or the pinstripe in your suit. But remember, with cufflinks, size is an important thing. The size should be in proportion with your overall look. Delicate/feminine soft colours need a very delicate cufflink, larger bolder colours worn with a power suit can sustain a heavier set of cufflinks.
