Machines That Employ Hydraulic Use

By: Cameron Diesel

Since from the beginning of time, man has been using machinery and tools to improve his quality of life and perfecting work efficiency. We are the only species on earth with the intelligence to design and implement tools that are able to assist us in our daily tasks. Over the past generations, technological advancements have improved the tools we use today, and have continuously revolutionized industries through each generation, in particular those of the past 150 years. The hydraulics industry in particular can be credited with significantly impacting and changing the face of human machinery forever. Hydraulic systems are tools and machines that rely heavily on high pressure liquid power to fulfill its functions. The state of purity of this liquid is crucial to be able to perform its purpose, which means the hydraulics liquid has to be run through an oil distillation system to filter out any impurities.

Various motors and cylinders will transmit the liquid through control valves, tubes and hoses to the motors and cylinders. Many machinery used in performing serious functions in everyday use uses hydraulics to function. Bulldozers, referred to as crawlers move by using rigid plates that are joined to each other set on wheels, using continuous tracks. The function of this track movement is to allocate the machine’s mass over a larger surface than mere wheels would allow for. The bulldozer is geared with a dozer blade. The term ‘bulldozer’ refers to a tractor equipped with a dozer blade.

The dozer blade is used for moving sand, debris and soil, especially in the construction industry. It is fitted with hydraulic cylinders, which allows for much higher exactitude in the blade’s operation. More machinery which makes use of hydraulics in its function is a backhoe. An excavating tool, it is referred to as a digger. Simply put, it is a tractor which is fitted wit an articulated arm with a digging bucket at the end, used in excavation. The arm nearest to the vehicle is called a boom, and the other a dipper. The arm and bucket are powered by highly sophisticated hydraulics which allow for accurate movement.

Hydraulic systems are used to power forklifts. Industrial trucks are used to power such machines which are used in the lifting and transporting of heavy materials, especially in the moving and lifting of pallets in stock distribution centres and warehouses. The forklift’s mask does the most work in the lowering and raising of the loads. Hydraulics are used in our daily lives, even if we do not realize it.
