By: daniel greene

Today the medical profession's promise of prestige plus high salaries lures a lot of people to them who think they want to doctors. But not all medical school students can handle the grueling demands of their training, and some eventually decide to stop chasing after their expensive and time-consuming dream. A career in medicine, is not something that should be pushed on a young person who has yet to decide on a career path. To be successful in achieving your goal and being able to keep up in medical school you need to be completely devoted.

According to one doctor with a community hospital, if a young person approached him and asked for advice on getting into the medical career, he would probably explain in detail the sort of effort that must be exerted to survive medical school and subsequent training. The physician stated that a candidate for the medical field needs to be 100% certain that it is what they want to do. While great sacrifice through the school and training period are the norm they will find redemption with the rewards they will reap down the line if they are able to pass the many tests ahead. The medical field is constantly hiring new physicians. You will be hard pressed to find a doctor who ended up disappointed with their chosen profession.

A career as a practicing physician will involve at least nine years of education and training, which will include four years spent in medical school, and an internship of one or more years. If you choose to be a specialist in medicine, you must also spend another five years in residency. However there are plenty of opportunities out there for somebody with the right degree, in medicine your options are so varied there is no doubt you will find something you are perfectly suited for. Opportunities in medicine include careers in research, private medicine, public health, and institutional medicine, to name a few. Males and females will follow the same course of study, with identical requirements and expectations. Some women find this discouraging, but still find a wide variety of job opportunities in the medical field.

One family doctor said his medical career began in an unusual way. During his six years of service in the navy, he was assigned to work with the medical corps. He stated that although he didn't have choice in the matter, he practiced with doctors and nurses for six years and that fact decided his career for him.

The worst thing about being a medical professional by far is the long hours you may be required to work. This doctor states that there are times when he can't have much time with his family, and this bothers him. He can't really add up the hours he works every week, but he thinks it is approximately 60 hours. This time is split between seeing patients in his office and making the rounds to visit his hospitalized patients. In addition, he's on 24 hour call all the time. A lesser portion of his working hours include providing medical services to a variety of industries doing examinations, preventative and treatment measures.

A physician is not on a set or contracted salary; instead, he is paid as based on the amount of work and type of work he conducts. For those who are brave enough to make it through the grueling education and extremely long hours, there will be rewards. Not just financially, but the satisfaction of helping other human beings can be the biggest reward. Many doctors will tell you that when they make a difficult diagnosis or even take measures to save a patients life, the reward felt is like no other.
