Who Is This For

What Does The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 8547 Come With??

The LEGO Mindstorms NXT 8547 comes with a total of six hundred and nineteen pieces. This consists of a collection of beams, sensors, rods, connectors and wheels.

Underlying Building Blocks

You may notice that the rudimentary piece is a beam rather than a block as they usually have in LEGO, causing it to look a little like Meccano. Not like Meccano however, you can easily put the pieces together without the need for any screw drivers or spanners - just use your hands. All you need is the contents of your box, and of course... a PC.

3 Motors - The Movement Unit

These motors will cause your robots physical motions.

Sensory Units

The sensory unit s are like the eyes & ears of the robot. You'll find the following sensors with the Mindstorms NXT 2.0…

1. A light sensor, with which your robot can 'see' different levels of light and even 'see' colors so that it can respond when you show it a blue ball for example, and not respond to a yellow one or respond differently.

2. A kinesthetic sensor, which lets the robot respond to touch.

3. A sound sensor, which responds to audio input from the environment.

4. An ultrasonic sensor that employs simple echo-location to determine how far away it is from a solid object.

The NXT Intelligent Brick

This is your robot’s core, a tiny computer that processes selective information from the four unique sensors and depending on what programming you put in, directs the servo motors to respond by implementation a movement, whether this is through the robot moving ahead, driving around on its wheels, streaming water into a cup.... and the list continues.

Instruction Manual

The User's Booklet is an excellent way for you to discover how to build your first few robots, with one-step-at-a-time instructions on how to make a shooter bot, robotic alligator, color sorting machine and a walking man-like robot as featured on the box.

When you've mastered these four models, you can then go on to experiment with innovative machines of your own choosing. When you're lost for ideas, you can always go out and get yourself some experts guides written explicitly for Legos Mindstorm NXT, which will run you through how to make more advanced robots.

Be warned though, you may face some frustration from not having enough pieces to build absolutely anything you want. If you run into this pitfall, rest assured - you don't have to purchase a whole nother Mindstorms set. Instead, you can simply complement your current Mindstorms set with parts from the Lego Technique range.
