Keeping up the Relevance of Dentistry Kept the Revenues Relevant as Well

By: Joseph Hopkins

The success of the dental industry in prevention of tooth decay for 20 years has ironically brought about some problem to their practice as 1980s entered. General dentistry may have lost its revenues but this was just transferred to the now flourishing cosmetic dentistry. Above 80 percent of the 130,000 American dentists now do cosmetic dentistry and a lot are saying that this is the aspect of the practice that grows with the highest pace.

It was appraised by a medical college professor in Georgia and author of a book that nearly 50 percent of the 32 billion dollar revenue of dentistry accomplished by the cosmetic branch of the industry. According to the president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, dentists do three times as much cosmetic work as five years ago. The advent of better materials have contributed to this great increase.

Most notable among them are porcelain laminates, thin porcelain veneers that are slipped over existing teeth and bonded into place. So that chipping will be prevented, patients should not bite hard, like on spareribs and even their own nails. It is not so difficult to maintain and the laminates are durable and still resemble the original teeth. Using porcelain laminates is bringing in as high as $250,000 a year in revenue for dentists who averages 10 treatments a month.

A chemical treatment, bleaching, is now a popular cosmetic dental treatment in America and you can have whiter teeth from this procedure for $100 to $200 per treatment. Public personalities like entertainers and politicians are mostly the ones who avail of this procedure. This is not limited to the public individuals but also for the private people, particularly men who have shown up in cosmetic dentist clinics. Guys now make up 40 percent of cosmetic dentistry patients, up from just about 20 percent a few years ago.

Although dentists have long been using porcelain, it was only recently that porcelain veneers, and the covering technique to current teeth has been fully refined. American manufacturers will be able to gain as much as 20 million dollars from selling 300,000 porcelain laminates this year. Even if porcelain is most favored technique for now, researchers of dentistry are always on the lookout, testing and baking to find the next better bond. A particular dentist uses small portions of ceramic in a gum base to come up with caps and bridges. It is first molded in the mouth and then the caps are baked in an oven for seven minutes. The product is a twice as strong cap compared to the porcelain laminates and it is cheaper by half the price.

Baked bonding can be done in the clinic provided that the dentist who will perform it has a specially designed oven which costs about $1000. While a dentist works with ovens, another New York dentist has formulated his original silk bonding technique that he claims increases bonding strength three times. This, however, is more expensive than the ordinary bonding. ADA is agreeable to the strengthening ability of the baking technique, but they say that the improvement is not that significant.

Cutting out the need for bonding in certain cases is another new process being used. At present, they are just putting hydrogen peroxide to whiten them. There is yet to be any ill effect reported but occasionally, the discoloration recurs over time. An isolated problem of cosmetic dentists is that the clients are not so clear about the result of cosmetic alterations and majority will come back because of uncertainty.

A faculty member at a Southern California university has embedded a computer system in his office that allows clients to visualize their expected smile appearance after the cosmetic work. The contents of the system are a video camera, an electronic pen and electronic writing pad, a computer and a color monitor. He uses the video camera to get an image of the client's smile before the procedure which is then fed to the monitor. The computerized pen and pad are very helpful in showing the cosmetic changes that transpire with teeth bleaching, gap closing or edge smoothing.

Their smile when seen up close is different from what most people expected to see. The minor change and its great effect it has on their overall look always amaze the people.
