Is page speed going to be a political issue in the future? This might become a topic because of the imbalance in the quality in which the internet speed moves in the developing countries. The advanced countries are already at top speed with a good infrastructure to transmit the data. But not ever country has the funds or technology to be able to give this to their citizens.

Politics has entered the picture of the speed in which the internet can transmit data in countries, but for different reasons than you might think. Information is power and if citizens of repressed nations acquire too much, there might be a revolt. With this in mind, it is amazing to see which countries at the beginning of 2009 had the highest internet speed. The top 5 all had speeds in excess of 10,000 kb/s and they were South Korea, Japan, Lithuania, Sweden, and Romania. The next five were under 10,000 kb/s but not by much and they were Latvia, Bulgaria, Netherlands, Germany, and the Russian Federation.

The infrastructure is partly to blame. The countries that have invested in fiber optics have a greater speed than those still using the standard telephone lines that have been in place for over 50 years. The demand for equality is being shown in the recent climate talks that were held. Over half of the nations banded together against the rich industrialized nations in a political effort to get more help. This kind of cooperation could continue into other areas like the sharing of information and internet speed.

The reason many developing nations have the desire for higher internet speed is more than just a want; it is a need for job growth. The faster the internet speed a country has, the better chances of retaining those in their country with the drive and ability to use the internet as a source of income. Other uses of the internet to help developing nations are what has happened in India. There are a group of farmers that are using the internet to help with weather predictions and to find out the latest techniques that can assist them with their crops.

A report for the Information and Communications for Development 2009 contained the information from a survey which concluded that a 10% increase in internet speed helped the economy of a country to grow by 1.3%. This could easily be translated to high internet speed for developing nations would help equalize the disparity between rich nations and poorer ones. How would this equalization change the standard of living in the developed countries?
Money and power is the reason this issue is becoming a political issue. The countries that are leading the developing nations in the information and technology sectors are India, China, Mexico and the Philippines. The greater the equality becomes, the bigger this political issue will develop.

Is page speed going to be a political issue – it already is a reality. But at the moment, it is behind an even greater concern and that is of the world’s climate.
