Internet Marketing - A Clarification

By: Brent Thomason

So Exactly what is internet marketing? Internet marketing is utilizing the internet as a tool to research a product or products, then researching that product(s) competitors. Then based upon that research using the internet as a marketing, and or advertising resource to market and sale a specific product, or generate a list of potential customers or sales leads for the sale of a future product, products, and or service.
Simply put, internet marketers are individuals or teams that focus on and specialize in using the internet with their combined skills and expertise to research and locate a product to promote that have the potential of the highest level of sale conversions to promote, then create the most amount of exposure that will make the maximum level of sales with the lowest amount of resources.

Selecting the product:
In the businessof internet marketing, choosing the best product to market, promote, and sale is key. Especially as a beginning internet marketer, you will experience almost immediate failure if you target a product that is flooded such as insurance, credit card offers, real estate, or mortgage lead generation. You also likely to fail if you target a product(s) or service that has very little interest for example if you were trying to market, promote and sale an E-Book on how to cook roaches.

There are many different products on the market that help internet marketers find, sift through, research, and choose great selling niche products that they can promote, sale, and make fair money selling. Since some products at some point eventually die off, and or become flooded with internet marketing guys, true internet marketers are very skilled at the process of finding products, and are regularly on the look out for great products to they can promote and sale.

If you are looking at following the route an internet marketer that will be researching, and selecting multiple products and niches to promote, then consider this when doing your research. as still today in the old days prior to the internet, the big marketing teams would put up thousands of dollars in deep research just to analyze if a specific product was even worth putting the time, effort, and money into promoting it. Often times large marketing firms would utilize all this time and money in research simply to decide not to pursue the promotion of a specific product. So as you can see product selection should be viewed as a main factor in the internet marketer's process, and not be taken lightly.

Advertising
A great example of just pure advertising would be a television commercial that just emphasisis the great things about say a big bank. The intent of that commercial is mostly brand building or name recognition, and not necessarily to grab a customer or sale on the spot. In other words, when the large bank runs that television commercial, they typically won't have someone sitting by a phone waiting on a huge rush of immediate phone calls to come in right after the commercial airs.

Many organizations utilize many different forms of advertising such as TV, newspaper and magazine articles, classified ads in newspapers, radio, co-op and direct coupon mail outs, and phone book advertising. Successful internet marketers realize that it is not that much different for them, and over time have developed, and have in place and ready to go tons of different avenues for getting huge amounts of online exposure at their fingertips most of which requires very littlemoney if any at all.

Marketing
An example of just plain marketing was in the old days with the telemarketers. The telemarketers essentially were mostly a lead generator, some did finalize sales, but with many organizations such as mortgage, insurance, or service oriented companies groups, were lead generators. In these cases, the telemarketer was truely marketing because they essentially were not really making calls to just build a brand name. The telemarketer's role was mostly to grab a lead that they thought to be through some level of the customers interest to likely be a strong potential buying customer, and turn it over to a sales department to close a deal or make a sale.

Pure marketing from an internet marketer's point of view for example would be a plain internet form that is utilized to grab a potential buyer's contact information. For example, if you see a ad on a website that says "Make $400.00 perweek online", with a form asking for your email address and name, that would be a form of just marketing. The marketer is simply looking for future customers to add to their list of folks that have some interest in making money online.

Keep all of this in mind when you're putting together marketing campaigns. In the old days, hundreds and thousands of dollars were paid to pro level writers to develop the perfect telemarketing sales pitch, and if you were ever unlucky enough to have worked for any of those telemarketing groups, you know that many of them required that you followed this script exactly. Often times these scripts were thought to be corporate knowledge that many telemarketing firms protected almost as they would secret formulas. So yes you should, spend adequate time and effort in developing the initial pitch you intend to utilize for that initial email blast or ad or what ever method you use for your initial exposure.

Advertising / Marketing:
Both marketing and advertising often share the same space in many situations, and typically sales will stand alone. For example, in many big corporations, you will have a advertising and marketing division separate from the sales division. The advertising and marketing division essentially develops marketing and advertising campaigns together to create new leads for the sales division.

Now let's look at an example of when the line turns gray differentiating between marketing and advertising is with campaigns such as with a postcard mailing. If the piece that the company mailed out just had the company's name on it, and what they did but with no address, phone numbers, or contact information on it, that would be just plain advertising, and not necessarily a specific form of marketing or lead generation piece. In many cases, advertising and marketing roll in together. For example, if you see a form on a web site that says "Make $300.00 per day online" along with the brand name Steve?s Internet Marketing Class, and a place to submit your email address and name that would be an good example of advertising (Lead generation or list building) and marketing (brand name building) both together.

Sales
After introducing the product, and creating a lead, you want someone that is a strong salesman or closer that can close the deal and actually get the customer to get the checkbook or credit card out, and seal the deal. In many cases with internet marketers, the sale is closed online with the standard buy now button. Often times for big product launches, hundreds and thousands of dollars are used in creating the potentially most effective sales page to insure maximum level of sales every time that page is seen. Consider this when developing your own sales page(s). This is where you would need to be wearing your sales hat. Quite often this is the last chance you will have at making this sale. Many times after the potential buyer closes that page, their gone for good.

In Conclusion
Essentially the internet can be used as a marketing tool or lead generation tool, an advertising resource just for brand name promotion, a virtual salesperson or all together. Look at it this way, If you have a web site that introduces your firm, and on the same page has a form to fill out or a number to call for a interested consumer to contact you, then you are using that web site as both a advertising and brand name piece for brand name building and name recognition, and also as a lead generation marketing piece. And if you add a buy now button on that same page where the visitor can buy the product right then in real time, that one page has become an advertising piece, a marketing piece, and a salesperson all in one.

Successful internet marketers over time have acquired, developed, and honed the skills needed to inexpensively reach hundreds of thousands of targeted potential customers, present advertising, marketing, and sales pages to those prospects in a way as to create the highest levels of response that closes sales, or gets a desired response from a web site visitor. These are the talents that have positioned true internet marketers in today's business environment to work when and wherever they want to work, and make the kind of money they do.

These skills have not been developed overnight, but built on by a ongoing collection of knowledge, and acquired marketing tools that have launched them into the absolute best positions any entrepreneur could ever ask to be in. The journey is definetly an investment of time and minimal money that can be easily started on a small budget, and pay for itself along the way.

One of the hottest bits of advice I ever received was to start reviewing all the internet money making systems around, set a budget which for me then was around four hundred dollars, start purchasing the systems, completely implement and learn everything I could from each system. Once I had purchased and implemented my budgets worth of various systems, I would stop spending until the systems I had implemented had made the money from my budget back. This was excellent advice. All of the systems paid for them selves over time supplying me with a huge amount of knowledge and tools, and looking back I wish I would have set my budget higher, and jumped up the ladder a little faster.
