I love Diverse Political Thought!

By: Rob Schmidt

I love the interactive aspect of social media like Twitter and the opportunity to learn. A day without learning is a day wasted in my opinion and the freedom of speech in the US makes life interesting.
The other day I had an extended discussion with a very nice woman that notes she is from the Chicago area. I launched this website because I love the lightning rod aspect of the name and topic. Often times, I follow people with very different political opinions to hear diverse thoughts to challenge my current thinking. My family has the same diversity as I have a far left family member that teaches at a university who debates with another member who an evangelical conservative - also a lively discussion and one I look forward to.
The reason I decided to add this Twitter discussion to my blog is because of the passion of Twitter account @futuredirected, a self described socialist, and I'm interested in the perspective of others who follow us on Twitter or read our blogs: Specifically:
- Why should companies be excluded from the opportunity to operate under the auspices of freedom of speech which US citizens enjoy? Aren't corporations a collection of people that have decisions made by people? Depending on my political views, I might not like the communication of the NRA or MoveOn.org but why should the organization have its freedom stifled in either case?
- The discussion circled for a bit around whether a corporation is a legal entity or "living" from the standpoint that a corporation is not just a factory, office building, or retail location - it is a collection of people following strategies to achieve a common goal. I think both perspectives are true but what do you think?
- I feel if a company communicates in a way I don't like, I can chose to withhold my purchases which will mean their sales/profits will decrease. In that situation, the company will need to either go out of business if enough people act in a similar fashion or it will need to change to survive. However, @futuredirected didn't seem to embrace this concept. Can corporations be punished for the political views or business tactics they utilize?
- If corporations are "evil", why would socialism be optimal? Socialism would need to be ruled by the ultimate corporation, the government, which can swing wildly in direction/philosophy with different parties winning elections? How will socialism improve freedom or the lack of freedom we have today?
- I suggested if workers don't agree with the corporation they work for, they have the freedom to leave that company and work for a different one they agree with. @futuredirected expressed the idea that workers are punished in that situation and I think workers are empowered - which opinion is right? I believe employees run the world and make a difference with their choice of the company they work for. Am I wrong? Does taking a new job cost employees dearly?
- We had a great deal in common with regards to the current political climate and the need for responsible, honest speech. While we might differ on what we think is honest/responsible, I enjoyed the fact that we had that in common.
- Does the constitution only protect the wealthy? Is it a worthless piece of paper that doesn't protect the lowest? I think it protects everyone equally and is one of the best examples of everyone being on equal footing in the country - what do you think?
The full discussion is below and I'd love your opinion. It might be a little difficult to follow but hopefully it will inspire your thoughts - thanks to @futuredirected and everyone that has a comment!
