How to build more confident presentation skills

By: John Presentationski

Lots of presenters when asked what’s the one thing they’d like to do differently, would probably respond with “present with more confidence”. So what is it about presenting with confidence that makes it difficult for people to achieve this when presenting to their audience? Too little practise? Lack of training?

Typical reactions you may experience when presenting without the desired confidence are nerves / butterflies, mumbling, being inaudible, dry mouth. If we took everybody’s symptoms and put them all in a list you’d probably be surprised at just how many there are. And you would probably be amazed at just how many ‘confident presenters’ have actually experienced some of these feelings as well.

OK then just how can you become more confident when presenting? What can we do to get into a more positive state?

There are many different techniques that people use. Some will work for you better than others. Below are 3 key tips that probably everybody can use.

Do your preparation. Know your audience, what makes them tick.Research your audience thoroughly. So that you can select the most important material in your presentation that is relevant and will be of interest.

Create a clear structure to the presentation. Keep it straightforward with a specific beginning, middle and end. And limit your main points to three in total. This will help you stay on track and as a result make it easier for the audience to follow.

Try and speak more slowly. Don’t rush things. Take more time with your delivery. The temptation is always to rush through things. But if you think ‘slow motion’ when you begin you will actually feel more in control and this will give you more self confidence.

Try out these 3 simple ideas the next time you are asked to present. And you will find that you feel more confident before you start and that you feel more in control throughout your presentation.
