How to Plant and Grow a Successful Grape Vine

By: Jessie Stone

Does a bottle of wine that you made with your own grapes sound relaxing and luxurious? Sipping on that delicious wine you made yourself is even better. If you are interested in growing and planting your own grapes, you will be surprised to know that it's not so complicated.

You need to first decide how large you want your vineyard to be. Beginners should start out with a few vines, in other words 10. When making homemade wine, you are going to need about 10 vines as most homemade wines are produced in batches of 5 gallons. There are nurseries that sell year old bare-rooted grapes that are dormant. These are good to start with when beginning your vineyard. These are vines that the nurseries have started to grow in their fields. Early spring is a good time to get these vines as it's the perfect climate to begin planting the vines. Rains that occur in spring are perfect and will have many benefits for your grapes. They can allow your vines to settle into the soil before growing season begins. Until they are ready to be planted, you should keep the vines moistened with water.

When it comes to planting your vines, it's straightforward and easy. Start by digging large holes that will fit the root system of the vines. Make sure that you don't cover the bulbs of the roots. While you are patting the soil gently, be sure to hold the vine inside the hole. Doing this prevents and decreases air holes, and removes any that are in the soil. You can also make watering easier by leaving a small depression around the vine base. If the soil is slightly damp, there is no need to water your newly planted vines.

Once your vines begin to look more alive, you should always ensure that your soil is damp at all times. However, if your area gets pretty good rainfalls, you may not need to keep your soil moist as the rains will take care of this. However, if rain is scarce in your area, you are going to need to keep the soil moist. Also, if you have soil that is a bit sandy, you also need to keep it watered quite often. Soils that are clay based should not be watered as often as the clay helps to retain water. No matter what kind of soil you have, you are going to have the proper drainage in order to keep your vines healthy and alive. Proper drainage can allow excessive rains to drain and not soak your plants.

Making sure that your vineyard gets adequate sunlight and air is also a necessity of having a healthy vineyard. It's important to not plant your vines near trees or other structures t may prevent them from getting the proper sunlight they need to grow. Plants need proper sunlight in order to undergo photosynthesis. The sugar that is contained in the grapes is what makes fermentation possible and then turns to alcohol. If the grapes don't have proper air flow and sunlight, they may end up growing fungus or other disease issues.

Wine lovers can now grow their own grapes. It can be a reality finally. However, a vineyard does require constant attention. This includes weeding, pruning and feeding it. You should have patience as it can take up to three years for you to grow your first grapes. However, putting the time and effort into your vineyard can reap great benefits once you are sipping on some of your own wine.
