How to Brighten up Those Gloomy Corners

By: Stephen Drommonsy

How can you light up your gloomy corners? How will you highlight your favourite paintings? How can you be able to make out what you're doing in the kitchen? Decent lighting is important if you are to make the most out of your interiors, it's the first thing you ought to think about when doing up a room.

A decent electrician has all types of lighting at his disposal to install in your house. Gone are the years when a solitary hanging pendant light was the only light resource, with maybe a table lamp for reading and writing. Electricians now chat about ambient, feature and task lighting - and in one room you can have all three of them together!

Ambient lighting is classed as general lighting that guarantees brightness. In certain rooms it is effective to get your electrician to put this kind of lighting on a dimmer switch. For example in living rooms and dining rooms where you may possibly want to create the right ambience for romance or entertaining. It can also be very useful in bedrooms - particularly junior bedrooms where you may well want to check on the little ones in the middle of the night without frightening them awake! And in the bathroom, it can help create serenity following a hectic day - especially if accompanied by a candle or two.

Feature lighting highlights singular features that you require people to observe. Perhaps a special painting or an appealing piece of your furniture. It can also appear impressive on shelving or in alcoves where it will guide people towards interesting features.

Task lighting is very sensible. It ensures you can accurately see what you're doing. For example, cooking in the kitchen, reading a book in bed or putting on make-up in front of a mirror. It provides strong light at a particular place and is essential for getting things done without straining the eyes.

Electricians will sort your lighting needs with several light sources. Downlighters are buried into the ceiling or attached to the wall. If they are intending to be recessed you will want to check that the cavity between the ceiling and the floor above is large enough to take the lighting fixture. Downlighters will give narrow or wide beams of light, which ever one you prefer, remember that the latter is a good solution for all-purpose lighting.

Uplighters are usually fixed to the wall and throw light upwards to the ceiling, which is then in turn mirrored back into the room. These type lights can increase the feeling of space and height in a room, as long as the ceiling is white or very pale.

Wallwashers cast light up and down a wall, again reflecting light into the room but in addition creating an pleasing light element on the wall, particularly if the beams are thin. They are particularly effective at highlighting appealing wall textures, for instance polished concrete or uncovered brick work.

Decorative lights can be a brilliant feature and work particularly well if paired with supplementary lighting so that the decorative light does not have to do all the work of lighting an area. It can then be treasured as a decoration rather than merely a light resource. This include pendant lights, chandeliers and attractive table lights.

Before your electrician fixes the light fitting that you've chosen, it's worth considering the type of bulb it needs. Low-voltage bulbs work particularly well as inconspicuous feature lighting. Fluorescent bulbs produce even, flat light and are excellent for uplighters and wall washers. Clear tungsten bulbs with a bare filament will give off highly defined shadows. Frosted bulbs provide softer, more diffused light.

Also, discuss with your electrician the kind of controls which you prefer. Apart from dimmers there are also controls that can include all of the lights in a room on pre-set controls, maybe you prefer to have the lights programmed to different moods - very bright, very dim or some lights on and others off. This enables you to create the correct mood at the flip of just one switch rather than going round the room placing several lights on and off, which can be tedious.

Good quality lighting will transform a home. So make it a priority when you are redecorating - use it as the opening place and you can't go wrong.

As a Landlord myself I have come across many problems over the years. But I am glad that I can say "none of my tenants have ever had an accident while living in one of my properties". I have always had my homes maintained by the same company, and over the years they have saved me a lot of money just by giving me some advise.
