How Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Church Book Influenced My Internet Business

By: Jose Anajero

When I was beginning my entrepreneurial journey few years ago, my friend asked me who's my model in entrepreneurship. My ready response was - Rick Warren.

Pastor Rick Warren, even though not your normal business owner, is broadly recognized as highly entrepreneurial. Being a pastor of one of the largest Christian churches in the USA, his management expertise has been acknowledged. Quite a number of people declare that if Rick Warren is in the business world, he would be eligible as a CEO of a Fortune 500 corporation. His popular book Purpose Driven Church is now a classic management book; a recommended reading for Bank of America managers. And it served as one of the most important internet business resources for me.

Nearly four years ago, I left my somewhat easy occupation in the government to follow my dream. Because my passion is to help myself become flourishing entrepreneur while aiding others, I thought network marketing was the perfect business model for me.

I wanted to build up a Christ-centered network marketing group but I had no idea how. No one in my upline could help out. At that time, I had no idea what book to peruse. However my attention was directed to Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Church.

Even though Rick Warren did not expect it would be applied as a business management resource, there's much the world of business can learn from it.

Nothing precedes purpose, as Rick Warren says. The starting position for every church, or any business for that matter, should be the question, "Why do we exist?"

Right from the start, I knew what my purpose in business was. For that reason in spite of all the challenges and setbacks I experienced this past four years, I did not waver. Although I'm no longer doing network marketing, my initial dream of helping other entrepreneurs has never changed. With the support of my internet business adviser, I'm now equipping myself to become an internet marketing consultant in the future.

Perusing Rick Warren's Purpose Driven Church is like reading a standard management or marketing book. For example, there are sections on "Defining Your Purposes", "Who is Your Target", "Knowing Whom You Can Best Reach", and "Developing Your Strategy".

When I left my post, I did not expect shifting from employee to entrepreneur would be long and thorny for me. Though the idea of quiting never occurred to me, there were heartbreaking times when I didn't know where to go. It's during those times that I would be reminded of the story shared by Rick Warren on Chinese bamboo tree.

The Chinese bamboo tree is an amazing plant. You plant a bamboo sprout in the ground. You water and fertilize for four or five years but it lies undeveloped. But on the fifth year, things change noticeably. In a six-week period it grows to be a overwhelming ninety feet tall!

Every person goes through a so-called learning curve. We may not be seeing any concrete results when we are just starting out in online marketing. But we should not be discouraged. If we carry on, in due time and with the intervention of God, we will harvest our prize.
