Enough Online Practice! Time to Play in a Real Room

By: Jane Austin

Poker in Las Vegas has changed a lot over the past five years, with more and more room openings as the years go by, and the classic reliables undergoing changes just to keep up. If you are on vacation in a casino resort, it most probably already has a poker room, in which case you are good to go. It does not matter where you play, just enjoy and max out the experience. You can start with these choices below:

The Bellagio Poker Room
Although not as far ahead as it once was, the Bellagio is still the epicenter of the Las Vegas Poker scene. At least four major poker events are held here each year. The skill level varies very much at the lower levels, but at the top levels, this is as tough a room as there is out there. Bring your best game if you are coming to the Bellagio to play.

Binion's Poker Room
Most of the great moments in tournament poker history have occurred within these walls, as Binion's was the host casino of the World Series of Poker for the first 34 years of the event.
Pictures of each world champion from 1970 to 2005 are prominently placed. If these walls could talk, poker fans would never stop listening. The current poker room hosts many daily tournaments, and always has no limit games in play. Come and play here, just for the bragging rights.

Caesars Palace Poker Room
The Caesars Palace poker room is so large it can host up to 1,000 players at any time. The atmosphere in the room is not great, as they basically converted an old convention room into the new poker room. The location is away from the casino floor, which is an advantage since you have minimal distractions. For fans of low-limit buy-in tournaments, Caesars has some of the best blind structures of any casino in town. Daily tournaments often last in excess of 8 hours, and give the better players time to out-maneuver the competition.

Venetian Poker Room
One of the newer kids in town is the poker room at the Venetian. The room offers a special parking area for players, and has an aggressive comp program. It also has hosted the legendary 'Big Game' in the past. This is the biggest poker event out there, where the best of the best battle each other for hundreds of thousands each night. The room has an experienced poker staff. The Venetian offers tableside food service, which is becoming more and more rare at the top rooms. This room is also noted for the Deep Stack Series that is held several times a year.

MGM Grand Poker Room
The MGM Poker room is very upscale and hosts daily tournaments which attract the weakest players out there. The crowd is mostly tourists and recreational players, and the atmosphere is usually friendly and more relaxed compared to the other rooms.

The Mirage Poker Room
Once the center of the poker world, the Mirage is still a great place to play. Recent additions and upgrades to the surrounding casino, like the Beatles Cirque Du Soleil show, make the Mirage feel a lot "nicer" than it had in recent years. The daily tournaments still attract a good number of players.

Wynn Las Vegas Poker Room
Opened to much fanfare, the Wynn room is very upscale, and a nice place to play. The activity is mostly on the lower levels but big time players have occasionally been sighted. If you are booked here, you can always put yourself on the waiting list while you leisurely monitor everything from your room instead of waiting for a spot in the poker room. The room hosts tournaments most days at noon, and the prize pools can get pretty good at times, ranging from $300 to $500 buy in.

Red Rock Poker Room
This poker room is off the strip in the Summerlin area but is one of the favorites by the locals. The room is high tech with the dealers having the ability to view a screen with all of the player names. You might as well be in a Cheers bar where everyone knows your name. Also, the room has card tracker and seat tracker technology so that an unfilled seat does not stay unfilled for long, assuming there is a live body to take its place. You also get food service at the table, which is a nice touch .

The Rio
The Rio is famous for hosting the creme-de-la-creme of the poker world, through the WSOP, aka World Series of Poker. The Poker room has gotten a recent face lift and hosts daily tournaments that are quite popular. Check the schedule, this is the place you want to go to if you want to play against the best.

Please note that you can always find an active low-limit hold 'em at any of these rooms. But if you have the urge to play Stud or any other variation, you can always call and check if your preferred game is offered. Also, keep in mind if you and your friends want to play draw just like you do at home, just ask! It's possible the room may provide you a dealer, as long as you pay the time charge.
