Edged Weapons and Safely Escorting Prisoners.7 Guidelines to Ensure Your Safety:

By: Iza Scott

1) Since many individuals who illegally carry a knife or bladed weapon often carry more than one concealed in different places on their body, any individual who has been restrained subsequent to being implicated in a bladed weapon incident must be thoroughly and “carefully” searched. Take care not to suffer a dangerous “needle stick” injury by hidden syringes that could be contaminated by blood borne disease.
2) Ensure that the individual is securely restrained and is unable to replace his own weapons with improvised weapons that are lying about. (Ashtrays, drinking cups, bottles, pens, pencils, or something which may be in arms reach that can be used against you or people around you in a violent fashion
3) If it is necessary to move individuals within a venue or on the street past any members of the public, avoid doing it with out an associate unless it is completely vital. Lots of members among the armed gang culture who may still be in the immediate locale may be carrying bladed and edged weapons and might come to their friend’s aid, given the chance.
4) If the person is particularly violent, it may be that they are likely to have equally violent friends in the immediate vicinity. Unless it is completely essential, wait to move the person until sufficient back up exists and preferably wait for the police force to arrive.
5) Be aware of the fact that some people might be under the influence of drugs or suffering from a psychological disorder. Whilst you will need to apply the suitable methods of restraint consistent with assignment directives and legal privileges of the person, don't give them any opportunity to renew an assault upon you or others with an makeshift weapon or potentially dangerous object which may be inadvertently left in their reach.
6) Establish the potential risks to yourself or the individual before starting the escort and should violent confrontation occur during the escort, act upon them instantly and safely using restraining procedures that are permitted by state or federal regulations. Keep in mind that after you have apprehended the person that they're under your duty of care.
7) Acceptable Use of Force.
The concept of use of force in a knife assault is somewhat clear-cut, with a few exceptions. Security officers may be punished in the courts for using disproportionate force when dealing with offenders where their physical response is not appropriate to the level of danger that the offender is presenting in the course of the incident.
The security officer is quite often using a totally different mindset to an offender and will engage in a violent encounter with a different set of objectives. It's also true that offenders have a definite psychological advantage over security officers by virtue of the fact that they've quite often already formed an attack mindset before the security guard is conscious that trouble is on the horizon. Although security officers always have to be considering the legal ramifications of their behaviour in response to an attack, a bladed weapon attack leaves no room for this type of divided thinking, as deadly consequences may occur as the result of hesitation to defend oneself straight away. The offender will not be constrained by this kind of reasoning because the very nature of a edged weapon attack is really a pitiless and potentially lethal act. For that reason, professional security officers should be particularly aware and both physically and psychologically equipped for this kind of potentially dangerous armed attack. It's essential to understand that as a security officer it's not your function to punish offenders, but alternatively, a knife or bladed weapon attack should be treated with the utmost gravity. Protecting yourself legally before a situation turns violent is in many ways as significant as not being harmed during an actual encounter.
