Ebay and the small business.

By: Carl Broady

A few years ago it looked as if eBay was going to save the small business in America.
Small businesses in the U.S.A often find themselves having to compete with well organized well funded franchises and large corporations. eBay seemed to break this mold. Unfortunately it couldn't and didn't last. Big companies moved in to Ebay and the home businesses found themselves competing on Ebay with very large corporations with huge buying power who are able to negotiate much lower prices from suppliers.
The main problem with Ebay is and always has been finding things to offer for sale. The problem is that if you can locate it so can most other eBay sellers. And they do.
I, and I guess other sellers have had some limited success in purchasing a product for resale on eBay itself. What I would do is make a list of items that were good sellers. Then I would then bid on these items. more often than not I lost the auction but occasionally I would win one. Instead of re-auctioning any item I would often offer the item for sale at a fixed price in an Ebay store or on Amazon.com.

I learned very quickly not to become emotionally attached to the things that I was bidding on and losing auctions was just the name of the game. I would expect to lose quite a few auctions a day, and maybe not win any. When you have been outbid on an auction on eBay they will automatically send you an e-mail which says something like: don't let it get away. I always ignored this e-mail because I had bid as much as I could and still make a profit.
Another problem I came across time and time again with products that I bought on eBay is they were frequently not as good as described. On very few occasions was a product I bought on Ebay better than described. Unfortunately I think that that many people have had this same experience.
I think for Ebay to attract repeat custom that they have to address the quality issue. I think that there has to be a policy that the customer is always right, up to a point, there are nuisance customers who want return every purchase or will try to negotiate a lower price after the auction or sale. When these customers are identified they should have their accounts monitored.

When sellers know that the customer has every right to return Ebay purchases for a full refund or exchange including shipping, they will be far less unlikely to ship broken, Shoddy, counterfeit or substandard merchandise.
I think that eBay will flourish and will be the main auction site for many years to come and will remain a fine company but I think that they are going to have to fine tune some of their practices as they have recently with the feedback system.
