Drupal Themes For Beginners

By: Jason Mcdonald

Making a drupal theme is ultimately taking a unappealing website and giving it a certain appearance.
Drupal uses what they call themes to control the way your site is displayed to the end client. It does this via css and template files which are essentially ordinary html files with php snippets. Most people get overwhelmed by the whole theming thing but, it really isn't anything more that just understanding old html and a small amount of css. You will have a theme folder where all your changes should be made. On no account modify any primary files. This allows drupal to do its job and pass it to your theme folder where it will magically alter the output to what you have incorporated in your theme.
For beginning themers its easiest to take a peek at the standard drupal themes and work them backwards. Open up garland and check out the file organization, most have mainly the same files. Once you comprehend this then open up the files in isolation. Study each of them, you will see its just html and a little php.
With a small amount of effort you will begin to be able to do these themes on your own so jump right in, as long as you aren't changing the central files you won't lastingly damage anything.
