Discovering The Science Behind Profitable Small Companies.

By: ricky smithyy

I'm right here in Cape Cod, Ma talking with Derrick Schmidt of Schmidt Painting Company Cape Cod. Mr Schmidt how has the home painting business changed within the last two years amid the oppressive competition. Well I'm glad you talked about the amount of competitors we have faced this year and last. New building is way down forcing painting contractors from that market into our restoration market. Many general contractors are running out of work for their own employees so their taking over more of the project personally including the house painting. People who lost their jobs in other sectors of the economy are moving into our industry. These new renovation contractors are not outfitted to compete with our painting company on experience alone, so they sometimes go the one road they have to them to get work and that's by going cheap. These painting services are typically the cheapest painting company around however as everybody is aware of within the business world, that cheapest is not always the best. Within the house painting industry we always say "Cheap paint ain't good and good paint ain't cheap!" a similar thing can be said of those low-cost painting contractors. I inform potential customers there is 2 kind of contractors you'll have come here to present you an estimate. The first will come up in a brand new truck with out a drop of paint on their clothes, this sort of contractor has under no circumstances painted in his life you will be paying for his truck and all his employees. The 2nd type is the painting contractors that gives a price that is way too low this is because he has no insurance protection, little or no expertise and he'll use Walmart paint. I'll say that the increased competition has pushed prices down, but generally yearly earnings are way up.
Mr Schmidt what has set your company apart from the others? I'd like to think that our 12 years expertise in this industry is the number 1 contributing factor. Our customers know after they hire us that they'll see me and my wife on the job working everyday. However I'll say we have needed to adjust our business model to a more lean company, sometimes by rising the price we pay for paint products and spending more money on new equipment. Are you able to clarify that more because I am confused? Did you say you grew profits while increasing your cost to do business? Well sort of, what I did is spend more on supplies and products that enhanced production. Such as? Alright we use to use Benjamin Moore Solid Body Stain that cost $35 per gallon. Now we use a new product Benjamin Moore Arbor Coat which cost $40 per gallon this new stain is a revolution in stain blocking technology featuring the new gen x color pigments that they use in Aura. I can get 2 times better coverage with this stain which allows me to finish faster and use less product, usually forty percent less. For me the choice is simple and the home owners love the fact that it's guaranteed against fading.
Mr Schmidt what's your best sales gimmick? I let my body of work sell itself sometimes I do give potential customers this analogy. A paint job is quite a bit like a automobile, all of them have 4 wheels and go down the road but a Toyota will last you decades longer than a Yugo. Sure our painting company cost more much of the time however you get plenty of value in that and value is a bargain. Our painting business within the last 2 years modified our business model to allow our paint jobs to last 5 to 7 years the remainder of our industry still has a business model of paint jobs that last 3 to 5 years. Our painting company sees lots of our paint jobs go 10 years it's merely determined by how close to the ocean the house is among other factors. When clients understand your offering a paint job that will probably double the number of years till they have to paint once again. Then they don't mind paying 10% more.
Mr Schmidt is there any recommendation you would like to offer small company owners? Sure, always give your clients more than they anticipate and treat your customers like their friends. A customer will give you there business sometimes but a friend always desires to do business with a friend. Deal with folks fairly and always come when needed to service your work.
