Dental Assistant School and Beyond

By: John Z Walker

If you want to get into the rewardful career of Dental Assisting then you will more than likely need to get some type of training or schooling to be able to get a job working in a Dental office as an assistant. The most common way that you can get this type of training would be to enroll in a Dental Assisting school or similar program that will give you the certificate once completed.
These schools or classes will usually be anywhere from 6 months to a year long. Depending on which state you reside in will more than likely determine how much the school is going to cost. The one that I went to in Florida was in the $1,500 ball park.
Dental assistant school will go over all of the ground work that you will need to know when you are in the field. They will start off teaching you all of the basic terminology that you will need to know. For instance you will have to know the names of all the teeth that are in the mouth. You will also need to know all of the instruments that are used in a dental office.
This is very important as most of what you will be doing when you are in a dental procedure is handing the Dentist or the Hygienist instruments most of the time. You will also learn all about sterilization of the these dental instruments and the importance of keeping the office immaculate. Since there are always new people that are coming and going sanitization plays a major role.
Many dental schools also offer hands on training, as this in my opinion is the best type of training there is. You can read all the books in the world about being a dental assistant but actually doing what you are learning is the best way to learn.
There are also additional classes and certifications that you should get if you are looking to become a dental assistant. These are Expanded Functions, Radiology, and CPR. While there are some schools and programs that have these certifications in the program, there are many that do not.
The best thing in my opinion about being a dental assistant, is that the training for it is relatively cheap compared to many other careers that are out there, and much more rewarding to. You will be able to enjoy some great benefit packages, clean teeth, and the satisfaction of helping others and there oral hygiene.
Also many Dental offices will encourage their Dental Assistants to gain further education in the field of dentistry, which could eventually lead to becoming a Dentist or Hygienist.
