DIY Go-kart

Racing go-karts can be extremely fun and exciting. But you know what else is fun? Assembling them yourself!

While a commercially manufactured go-kart can be good to look at and an excellent machine to ride, a homemade go-kart can be just as beautiful and can work just as flawlessly as commercial designs do. All it needs to make one is lots of patience, lots of practice, special tools, and of course a bit of money to invest in buying plans, parts, and accessories. Of course building go-karts yourself will be cheaper than buying commercially-made ones. Now, if you're really serious about going into this hobby, read on.

Safety first

Before you start banging and hammering your way onto go-kart kookiness, first make sure that you are observing the proper handling of equipment and go-kart parts. If you are especially new to constructing go-kart, it would be advisable that you choose simple plans and avoid advanced plans. There are DIY go-kart kits which are especially made for beginning hobbyists such as yourself. Try building those first before building the more complicated go-kart plans out there. If you are building the go-kart for your kid, pick plans which don't include a lot of sharp parts or complicated joint connections than can come loose and injure your child.

Gathering all the needed parts and equipment

The next step is to find the parts required to build the go-kart. There are DIY go-kart kits which includes pre-made parts and accessories which you can just assemble without much work. However, if you'd prefer to really experience true go-kart building, you'll need to collect the parts from karting or motoring shops. Sometimes you'll need to improvise, and sometimes you'll need to modify certain parts from other vehicles. If you're a bit of a handyman or an excellent welder, you can build the frame yourself. If you're not much of an experienced welder, you can hire someone else to do the welding for you. Remember that it's important that the parts be welded properly or there's a danger that they may come loose while someone is riding the go-kart.

DIY go-karts have four main assemblies you need to work on
1. Front A-arms assembly
2. Main frame assembly
3. Steering system assembly
4. Drive axle assembly

You have two choices in assembling the vehicle. One, you can choose to assemble them yourself (which will require that you have all the right tools needed for the job) or two, you can have an automotive shop do the assembling for you (a bit costly but less time consuming for you, and you'll be sure the parts are fitted correctly).

Once the DIY go-kart is finished, take it out for a spin and drive it for a couple of rounds making sure that everything is working and nothing is loose or out of joint. Then, you can let the little tykes take over and have fun.
