Creating a Family Cookbook to Pass Down

By: araikordaina katamdi

When I began looking through a variety of my mother's recipes, I noticed she had some recipes left over from my grandmother. My grandmother was born in the late 1800's. Imagine how delighted I used to be to find these century-old recipes.

A range of these recipes are still created by both my mother and me today. Different recipes needed to be modified just a bit to create them healthy and to use ingredients that are found in nowadays's markets.

Creating a family cookbook can be a very straightforward procedure. I took home all of my mom's recipes and typed them up in a very word document.

If you'd like to incorporate alternative members of the family' recipes, write a note and raise if they can either postal mail or email you copies of their favorite family recipes. As an example, my mom's nephew married a girl who may be a wonderful cook. We wished a number of her recipes in our family cookbook.

When my husband's family created their family cookbook, they included a "family section" up front. This section included their names, spouses' names, address, email address, birthday, anniversary and then youngsters' names and birthdays. This was an awesome addition to their family cookbook.

Once you've collected recipes and alternative information, it's time to assemble your cookbook. I like simplicity. I selected what I feel are the fundamental recipe categories; Appetizers, Main Dishes, Aspect Dishes and Desserts. I could place each recipe into one of these four categories.

At this point you'll be as simple or detailed as you want. You'll be able to produce pages with borders around them. You'll bold the recipe name. You'll be in a position to add page numbers. You'll be in a position to create class pages. You'll be in a position to create a table of contents or index.

Your last step is putting all of the pages together. You can use half in. notebooks with dividers or you'll be in a position to take the pages to a replica search and have them copied and bound. I've got access to a binding machine therefore that is truly my 1st choice. My husband's family did theirs in little 3-ring scrapbook albums. They created [*fr1]-sized sheets with the recipes on them and then used the scrapbook for storage. This allowed them to create the cookbooks at home, instead of getting to take them to a printer.

Irrespective of how you place the pages along, you'll wish a cover sheet. At a minimum you would like your family name on the cover page. I've seen some family cookbooks that have the family crest on the cover. I've seen others that have a fairly border with the family name centered on the page.

These completed cookbooks build wonderful vacation gifts, going away gifts and wedding gifts as family members begin obtaining married.
Be creative and make a special souvenir for you own family, that includes all of those recipes you want to share along with your own children.
