Create a Non-Fiction Column

By: nikky Howard

Anyone who knows me well will tell you that I firmly believe non-fiction is simpler to interrupt into that fiction. And I stand by that theory.

Do not get me wrong, you cannot be a dangerous or mediocre author and still get published within the non-fiction arena; you certainly need to be a smart writer. It's simply that there are loads of paying markets accessible (whether or not that's low, medium or high paying), and editors in the field seem to be a lot of willing to take on newcomers.

Start by deciding the kind of articles you would like to write. I do not believe any of this 'write what you know' nonsense; that is what research is for. What you'll do, but, is have a basic understanding of the subject you would like to tackle.

Do you honestly suppose that I have personally been to every single tourist attraction in Australia, which I grasp each intricate detail regarding Australian history? As a result of if you believe the 'write what you recognize' philosophy, then you must believe that twaddle too.

I undertake a heap of analysis for my monthly column regarding places of interest in Australia, however I actually do not visit each place. After all I am going to as several as doable, however that is not perpetually financially, or perhaps physically, viable.

What I do though, is decide where I would really like to put in writing concerning, then contact every attraction, sometimes by mail, then later with a telephone decision if necessary. I request as a lot of information as they will provide, including videos, CD's of photographs, and printed matter. Once that arrives, there's invariably more research required to complete the project.

If you'd like to propose a daily column (on no matter subject), firstly decide if you'll find enough to write concerning to keep interest going. Jot down as several ideas as attainable in an exceedingly brainstorming session.

Do you have got enough concepts to sustain your column for at least one year? If not, and there's no possibility of doing thus, there is no purpose continuing. Brainstorm for an additional subject until you discover a viable subject.

When I determined to question for my travel column, I did a fast brainstorming session. When finding nearly 3 years value of ideas in less than thirty minutes, I knew I had a winner.

Try any publications that your articles would be suitable for. Do they have you to produce images to complement the articles? If that's the case, can you oblige? What kind of photographs do they need, digital or customary photos? Check the quality required. (Scan as: resolution)

If you are unable to fulfil their needs, there is no purpose continuing any further.

You now would like to send a question to the editor of the publication you're targeting. Check her name. Address your question on to that person, guaranteeing her name is spelled correctly. Use Ms or Mr as appropriate. And never, ever, address a query to 'Pricey John'. Forever address your query to "Expensive Mr Black" in the primary instance.

(Once you get a positive response, and the editor changes the correspondence to a less formal vogue - "Dear Mary" - that is the time to change over to a additional casual approach.)

On acceptance of your column, the editor can advice the word count for your column, and the amount of images required (if any) for each article. In most instances, a contract can be issued. Go over it with a fine tooth comb; if there's something - anything in the least - that produces you're feeling uncomfortable, question it.

For instance, if the publication is asking for 'all rights' meaning that you'll never, ever, sell that article again. If that's the case, you wish to be paid mega usd for each article.

Bear in mind, once you have got signed the contract, its binding; nothing will or can be changed.

So... your article or column has been accepted. What currently?

Enable lots of time; if you're something like me, you will be incredibly anxious regarding your first article with a brand new publisher (or your first ever article). Perhaps even surprised that somebody had enough religion in you to buy your work.

Coming up with your article can create it therefore much easier; jot down some notes about what you intend to incorporate within the finished article.

What are the most points you've chosen to spotlight?
What other points do you would like to incorporate?
Are there any quotes you'll be able to use?
Do the pictures you've got chosen relate to points mentioned in the article?
Do you have a signed 'model unleash' for every photograph you are using?

Build certain you start and finish your article creatively. Inventive non-fiction is simply that; you're telling a story. Imagine you are writing a piece of artistic fiction, except in this case the content is reality instead of fiction.

Your prose desires to be attention-grabbing and informative. Just as a result of it's non-fiction does not mean it can be boring.

Here's the primary line of my article regarding Puffing Billy - a stunning previous steam train in Australia:

I fell in love with Puffing Billy the terribly first time I heard it. I was around eight years old.

And here's the last line:

Nearly forty years on, the fun of Puffing Billy still haunts my memory - the love affair continues.

Now you've got written your article, it is time to try to to a check:

Can the title draw the reader in?

Will the first sentence grab the reader's attention?

Have you ever researched sufficiently?

Is your content plausible?

Do you're able to the point or ramble?

Are you repeating yourself?

Are all words spelled properly?

Is your punctuation excellent?

Do all images relate to the content in some means?

If the least bit potential, let your article sit for a few days, then go back over it using the above check list again.

To confirm repeat business with this publisher, never, ever, miss a deadline.
