Considering Getting a Vibrator - New Study Shows that You are in Good Company

By: Lolita Lenore

So who uses vibrators? The greater than ever visibility of vibrators in conventional media and regular shops, begs the question - Just how many people really use vibrators?

Until a short time ago there was not a large amount of reliable investigation on vibrator use. In 2009, Michael Reece, Debra Herbenick and colleagues at Indiana University published two surveys on vibrator use: Prevalence and Characteristics of Vibrator Use by Men in the United States and Prevalence and Characteristics of Vibrator Use by Women in the United States, which proffer a much more reliable and full look at vibrator use. Here are their conclusions:

On the whole, just under 50% of participants had made use of a vibrator at some time in their lives. This is true of slightly more females (52%) than men (45%).

When are vibrators enjoyed?

Females use vibrators commonly during masturbation (46%) and least during lovemaking (37%). On the other hand, men are for the most part expected to employ vibrators with a companion during love play or foreplay (40%). Only 17% of men had used a vibrator for masturbation. Among the most frequent reasons for males were: "for fun" (67%), "to help their partner attain orgasm (40%) and to attain orgasm themselves (7%).

How do vibrators relate to sexual function?

Vibrator users and non-vibrator users were compared on some measures of sexual performance. The enquiries correlated to erectile function, intercourse contentment, hurting, orgasm, lubrication and sensual desire. Largely, both men and women who use vibrators report fewer problems with regard to sexual function. Those who had used a vibrator within the earlier month, responded in ways that indicated a lesser amount of trouble with sexual function.

Wholesome actions and vibrator use?

Both men and girls who use vibrators were also probable to do things that point to a comfort with their bodies and a curiosity in taking care of themselves. Women who use a vibrator are more apt, than those who had not, to have had a gynecologic check-up in the last year and performed a genital self-exam in the last month. Guys who reported performing testicular self-exams within the last month were more liable to have made use of a vibrator than those who had not.

Cleaning sex toys?

The great news is that the majority of males and women do cleanse their vibrators. The dreadful news is that some don’t. 20% of males and 14% of girls reported never having cleaned their sextoys. Of those who do clean, behavior could however improve. 60% of women and 53% of men report cleaning their sex toy before and after use, with the remainder either cleansing before or after.

Does vibrator use have side-effects?

This section of the report was limited to women only.

- 71.5% never felt any side-effects.
- 16% experienced numbness
- 3% experienced pain
- 10% had irritation
- 8% felt swelling
- 1% experienced tears or cuts

In all cases, those who reported off-putting side-effects judged them to be pretty short-lived and trivial in seriousness.
