Classes Medical Billing - Finding A Job

By: Patrick Koschinska

The medical billing profession is very competitive, but it is
also very much in demand. Why? Because there aren’t a lot
of really good certified coders out there. So, if you want to
give yourself the best chance of finding a job and landing a
top salary, here are a few tips that will help you do it.

1. Take the exam and get your certification. It is
CRITICAL that you do this. This one step alone will give
you an edge over all the people who are NOT certified.
Score as high as you can. Yes, it matters.
2. Get some volunteer or apprenticeship work under your
belt as a part time coder BEFORE you apply for your
regular job. That’s right, work a summer for free if you
have to. This is going to go a LONG way to landing a
job. Nothing beats experience.
3. Put together a professional resume documenting that
work experience along with your certification. If you
can’t put together a professional resume on your own,
have a company do it for you. Do NOT skimp on this.
Your resume is what represents YOU. You’ll only get
one shot at each company you apply to.
4. When going on your interview, dress professionally.
Don’t walk in with torn jeans and a dirty shirt. Wear a
suit if you’re a guy or a skirt if you’re not. Yes, it’s
extremely old fashioned and it still works. A person
who looks good will get the job over somebody who
doesn’t…all else being equal.
5. Send your application to as many companies as you
can. The law of averages say that eventually, you’ll
land a job.
