Buying a Cheap Guitar - Is it Worth It?

By: Steve Miller

A lot folks think inexpensive guitars as low quality, poorly manufactured electric guitar. In reality, some people will be intimidated by the fact that it was not a American crafted guitar. You may never consider Korean or Chinese made electric guitars and may not ever purchase a inexpensive electric guitar, until recently.

Many big guitar manufacturers have already began selling their electric guitars in India, China and Korea to offer even more reasonably priced electric guitars for the common guitarist. Not everybody can afford a $1500+ Fender or Gibson guitars and there's a big market for low-priced guitars under $500.

Most of the Epiphone cheap guitars models which is own by Gibson guitars are now produced in Korea. Kramer, which is another company owned by Gibson produces a lot of its inexpensive electric guitars in Korea as well. Fender bought Jackson some years ago, and now most of the Jackson electric guitars are made in Korea and India. BC Rich inexpensive instruments and several Ibanez guitar models are built in Korea too.

The low cost of labor may also help the manufacturing of inexpensive guitar, but that alone cannot be the only reason for lowering electric guitar prices.

So, why are some electric guitars dirt cheap and other electric guitars are significantly expensive?

There are many elements determining a electric guitar cost.

The first factor for making a electric guitar cheap or expensive is the actual electric guitar manufacturing procedure. Was the electric guitar hand-crafted or was it produced in a automated modern electric guitar manufacturing facility? Hand-built guitars are usually more expensive, while the instruments coming out of an automated manufacturing facility are typically cheaper since the automated developing procedure doesn't require much physical labor such as guitar building, quality control factor which will govern a guitar price. Is the quality of the material used for building this instrument of the best quality? This can include the woods used for the guitar body and neck, the parts and finish. Cheaper instruments use cheap woods like plywood for building the guitar's body, while more expensive instruments use quality woods like rosewood, alder or mahogany.

The third factor for creating a electric guitar expensive or cheap is the quality of hardware and electronics that go in the electric guitar. Cheap instruments usually have inexpensive bridge, tuners, and standard pickups. Expensive instruments are crafted with quality electronics and hardware. For example the price of a double humbucking Seymour Duncan pickup will be a much higher price than the factory guitar pickup crafted in Korea or China.

Cheap Guitars - Is it worth it to buy one?

It really depends. Not everyone will bond with a cheap electric guitar. If you are pro musician and the guitar is your tool of trade, then you probably will not want to buy an inexpensive instrument. However most cheap instruments nowadays have an incredibly fine quality, professional artists prefer hand-built instruments innovated by professional luthiers.

If you do not want to splurge several thousands of dollars on a Fender Stratocaster of Gibson Les Paul, then you may want to have a look at less expensive guitars. Keep in mind that low-priced guitars are no longer no-name guitars. You can still buy Jackson, ESP, Ibanez, Fernandes, BC Rich, Squier, Epiphone, and many more famous electric guitar brands for less than $200!

I bought a low-priced electric guitar built in China by Fernandes for just $199. The electric guitar features a licensed Floyd Rose tremolo, a very great, fast neck and great tone. This instrument puts the "cheap" and "quality" all in one sentence. My inexpensive axe is worth much more than what I paid for it, and it is actually as good quality than some US crafted Fenders I have played.

Would you rather buy the cheapest US built Fender Stratocaster model for $600 or would you rather purchase a Japanese made Jackson, with Duncan Designed pickups, super fast neck and a Floyd Rose Tremolo system for $250? This conclusion of cheap / expensive guitar is yours.
