Backup Your Critical Files - Avoid a Disaster

By: Monika Nolte

Most people, apart from the professional computer user, are very apprehensive about losing their data. Many people, even if given the full software facilities to backup, just don’t bother assuming that it will never happen to them. People may think about data backup but never quite get around to it before disaster strikes, then when it does, obviously it’s too late.

Nothing could be worse in business than losing all of your records, tax details and especially, customer records.

The backing-up process can be done on individual, critical files or the whole hard disk. Files can be backed up onto CD or DVD, pen drive, hard drive - internal or external, or to a server. Floppy disks are less often used these days and also do not have enough capacity for backing up more than 1.44 megabytes of data. There are many other methods you could use but those will be covered in another article.

There are backup options with most of the Microsoft Windows applications. These programme help backup and protect your data but it is better to save the data you want manually or use a proprietary program to do the job for you.

The best advice is to use a server or external hard drive to backup your data. If possible, duplicate your backup and for security reasons keep one copy off-site. Nothing would be worse than taking all the precautions of backing-up your precious data, only to find that the whole building had gone up in flames during the night and the backup you were counting on was gone or worthless. After checking with the owner of the company, take a copy home or have the owner take it home for safe keeping.

It doesn’t matter which backup route you choose to follow as long as you achieve the desired result and your data is safe and recoverable. The various options are all relatively easy to use and it will not take a mastermind to figure out the process. Once you have utilised one of the options mentioned above, you can restore the backed-up information to your drive and continue using your computer.

Do bear this in mind - It is better to be safe than sorry. Creating a backup of your critical data is an essential part of YOUR computer responsibilities and should never be overlooked or put off .

Disaster does strike and it comes in many shapes and forms. If you haven’t done a regular backup of critical files and disaster does strike, you’ll feel that cold shiver run down your spine and kick yourself because you lost your critical data and don’t forget about all that valuable time you’ll have to use trying to recreate your data - if you can, that is.

If all else fails - you haven’t done a backup and your hard drive has not crashed but is just not available to you - there are several programs that a good computer technician can run to get your files back. Even though you think it is, all may not be lost!
Another more expensive option is to have a hard drive recovery specialist take your hard drive apart in a clean, dust free environment and recover the data track by track. This option is likely to cost between £500-£1000 ($800-$1600).

Save yourself lots of worry and problems - back your data up NOW.
