A web search engine is a tool designed to search for information on the Web. The search results are normally called hits and are presented in the form of a list. The data may contain web pages, images, information and other types of files. Some search engines also accumulate information available in databanks or open directories. If compared with Web directories which are maintained by human editors, search tools operate algorithmically or are a mix of human and algorithmic input. Internet search tools function by storing information about countless web pages which they retrieve from the WWW. These pages are retrieved by a web crawler, or differently called a spider. It is an automated Web browser which follows every link it discovers. After that the content of each page is analyzed to determine how to index it. Words, for instance, are taken from titles, headings or special fields called meta tags. Data about web pages are saved and stored in an index databank for further use in queries. Some search engines, such as Google, store the whole or part of the source page (referred to as a cache) as well as information about web pages, while others, such as AltaVista, save and store every word of every page they have found. This cached page always contains the actual search text, as it is the one that was actually indexed. Therefore, it can be very useful since it holds information that may no longer be found anywhere else on the Internet. When a web user types search words in the search field, the software programme looks through its databank and displays a listing of best-matching web pages in accordance with its criteria, commonly with a short summary containing the document's title and at times parts of the text. Some search engines have introduced an advanced tool called proximity search that allows users to determine the distance between search words. The relevance of the result set determines the usefulness of a search engine. Since there may be millions of web pages that comprise a particular word or word combination, web pages can be grouped into relevant and irrelevant ones. Most search tools apply methods to grade the results to provide the "best" results first. How a search engine decides which pages are the best matches, and in what arrangement the results should be shown, varies from one engine to another. The methods also change with time, because the use of Internet services alters and new techniques become available.
