In order to fulfill a poodle's maternal instincts, there was one psychologist who deals with dogs who prescribed a box turtle. When it comes to his profession, he takes it seriously and so he wrote a book entitled understanding your dog. An associate professor of psychology at local university and associate director for research at the local zoo is this doctor and his book serves to explain how animals are individuals as well. Usually, he expresses himself honestly even if people do presume too much sometimes. There was a time when a young couple owned a dog, as he said, and the dog would not let the husband into the bedroom. Whenever they fought, the dachshund owned by the couple would have a catatonic fit and this was mentioned in his book. Dogs usually develop like young children and according to him their body language is a lot like humans'. In addition, he also says that like humans dogs tolerate closeness differently. Dogs develop through several stages, the doctor points out, adding that the best time to get a puppy is when he is between six and eight weeks old. Getting a puppy older than 10 weeks should be avoided unless it has been raised with a lot of people around. How it interacts with other puppies is an important consideration to make when getting a dog. There are times when the most outgoing dog can easily be the most aggressive. Bring an old scarf or a glove with you and after he investigates it see if he will play a game of tug of war. What a puppy aged from five to six weeks does not need is discipline training for he will forget it but this is a good time to give him some tender loving care not to mention expose him to numerous experiences enriching his environment. As he mentions, at eight weeks there is a sensitive fear period and the owners should be careful enough not to cause any undue trauma for the puppies at this time including a doctor's appointment. It is at 12 weeks when the dog is already emotionally bonded to his owner and at this time discipline training will not break his spirit or attachment. A holder of a veterinary degree and a doctorate in psychology from a London university is this doctor and he offers recommendations for dog breeds for people in varying situations. As an example, he says that a golden retriever would work best for a family with children in the house, terriers are best for young couples, and then a schnauzer, a Yorkshire terrier, or a poodle is great for apartment couples, and finally a Yorkshire terrier, pekingese, or pug is best for older couples. What he mentioned was how the temperament of a dog is harder to identify nowadays based on breed than before. What he attributes this to is less quality in breeding. When it comes to dog breeders who come together and try to make changes in breed standards he calls them cranks. He says that a person who is unaware of the results should not attempt to make changes to standards. Mandatory testing for prize dogs is being emphasized today and this is before any of them are named the best in the breed. In this case, you would know that the winner was no frankenstein.
