A Drupal Theming Primer

By: Jason Mcdonald

Creating a theme in drupal is fundamentally taking a bland website and giving it a specific appearance.
Drupal uses what they call themes to rein in the way your website is revealed to the end user. It does this via css and template files which are ultimately standard html files with php snippets. Most people get overwhelmed by the entire theming thing but, it really isn't anything more that just understanding aged html and a small amount of css. You will have a theme folder where every one of your changes should be made. Never transform any primary files. This lets drupal to do its work and pass it to your theme folder where it will magically change the output to what you have incorporated in your theme.
For rookie themers its easiest to take a peek at the standard drupal themes and work them backwards. Open up zen and check out the file arrangement, most have fundamentally the same files. Once you understand this then open up the files individually. Examine them, you will notice its just html and a little php.
With a small amount of effort you will start being able to do these themes or templates on your own so leap right in, as long as you aren't messing with the core files you won't permanently damage anything.
