200-plus SIA licences suspended due to alleged schooling malpractice

By: Jeff Richards

Over 200 Security Industry Authority (SIA) licences are suspended following alleged negligence at London-based teaching centre Tristar.

Awarding body Edexcel has withdrawn the Level 2 BTEC Award within a Door Supervision certificates issued by Tristar, and uninvolved the action from its list of accredited guidance centres.

The licence holders all held door supervision qualifications from Leyton-based centre Tristar but, because their qualifications have now been withdrawn, 211 licence holders no longer meet the SIA’s licensing criteria which clearly states a specified qualification has to be passed.

Therefore, the Regulator has suspended these licences.

These suspensions is going to be reviewed from the 90 days’ time and, that the individuals do not need a valid qualification by this juncture, their licences might be revoked.

A person found to have been complicit inside the misconduct will need their licence revoked.
Comment with the Regulator

Hazel Russell, the SIA’s director of strategy and corporate services, commented:

“We take allegations of preparation misconduct very seriously indeed and, at the this case, have taken prompt action to suspend licences after receiving information from Edexcel.”

Russell went on to state: “guidance is a necessary part of the licensing process, ensuring that all those working within your security industry have been properly equipped to carry out their role. Reassuringly, you'll find relatively few reports of misconduct, and we work closely on the awarding bodies to establish that licence-linked qualifications meet the required standards.”

A spokesperson for Edexcel added: “Edexcel takes any abuse of our qualifications very seriously. We received allegations of unprofessional conduct within Tristar and distributed an intensive investigation, including the forensic analysis of test papers. We found substantiated evidence of mismanagement, and consequently withdrew over 200 Level 2 BTEC Awards inside Door Supervision and uninvolved the centre’s accreditation.”

The spokesperson concluded: “BTECs have been rigorous qualifications and, wherever necessary, we will always take operation to protect their value.”
